So a little background, I have always been obsessed with unexplained phenomena. As a 10 year-old boy, I would walk to the public library and check out multiple books on the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, The Pyramids, Easter Island, etc.... It was just ingrained in me that if there was a TV show on about these types of things, or a book that just came out, I was all over it. There's my starting point. Lately, this stuff has been extremely in-style with the popularity of shows like Ancient Aliens. So believe me, I get it and I love it. Graham Hancock is a guy that comes across as one of the more measured and if you will "less crazy" purveyors of ancient phenomena. Everybody knows Giorgio Tsoukalos because of the crazy hair and the bombastic statements. Hancock is sort of the professorial-looking dude who actually looks and sounds like he knows what he's talking about. So it was with great pleasure that I came across Fingerprints of the Gods. It is a book that has been out for some 20 odd years but I never got around to checking it out. Well all I will say is that if you love finding out a lot about the ruins of Machu Pichu, the mysterious Nazca Lines of Peru, how Antarctica was at one time not covered with ice and mapped out this way by explorers as recently as 600 years ago, the ancient pyramids of Giza, Easter Island, etc.... then you need to read this book. Hancock does a great job of presenting his theories while never portraying them as the only definitive answer. I had a lot of fun reading each chapter and then going online to "fact-check" what Graham had just presented. Of course the orthodox historians had perfectly reasonable explanations and also more believable ones, but it was very entertaining to compare the two schools of thought. I'm not naive, I know that Hancock's theories are simply to spark the imagination and most-likely pretty far from the actual truth. This doesn't mean that I didn't get a heck of a lot of enjoyment out of reading Fingerprints of the Gods though. Just take it with a grain of salt. But if you are into this kind of thing, this is about as good as it gets. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel Magicians of the Gods.

I somehow missed out on this book at the time that it became a massive global bestseller. I discovered it only recently and am now fascinated with the idea that mankind built a complex global civilization before the Clovis Comet disaster brought it to an end about 13,000 years ago. Even mainstream science is beginning to admit that mankind and his civilization are far more ancient than previously thought. Many thanks to Mr. Hancock, who has endured decades of abuse for his popularization of these ideas and for his ground-breaking work in finding underwater physical evidence to support them.

Loved it. It made me very interested in history to a point that I decided to go to Egypt and see all the ancient sites for myself.I has been about a year since I last read it so my memory of its exact content is dim.The only criticism I can think of for it is that there was a moment or two in the book where he presents data about different ancient cultures and proceeds to use the similarities within them to suggest a hypothesis. This is actually the majority of the book and they are always very well thought out and valid points. There were only I a couple of moments where I felt that an idea of his(Hancock) was a stretch. I have no academic background myself so I just went by a gut feeling.Other than that I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book of any kind. The scenes are engaging. Its thrilling to learn about ancient history and even more thrilling to see different ways it could be looked at.

I liked a lot of the information presented. Informative geology lessons, maps and astronomy. Also cool is the collection of repeated history, usually told through myths and/or religion. However, he seems bent on waxing poetic about the places he visits in a way that severely detracts from my desire to keep reading. Also, he constantly repeats motifs and concepts, to where my head started to scream. Also, he loves to ask rhetorical questions, and sets up a new chapter or sections with annoying questions that were based on hypotheses he just presented, or as a hackneyed approach to introducing the next topic. "Could it be that... Is it not possible that... But is it not possible that...?" Ugh.I still recommend it. There is a lot of fun stuff. It sets a fair argument for the possibility - nay, plausibility - of lost advanced ancient cultures and their wisdom.I just recommend you read other material to help flesh out alternative arguments and possibilities.

This book is a good starting point for anyone interested in real alternate history. It's a lengthy book but it is well written and it's simply amazing to see how much historians ignore or leave out of the mainstream and accepted version of history. As any person with an open mind who is well schooled in history can tell you, contrary to popular belief, we do NOT know everything about human history. There is great evidence of lost civilizations that we know nothing about. All we have are huge stone monoliths, that to this day are unexplained creations. Most like the pyramids and the sphinx in Egypt are attributed to the ancient Egyptians when geological evidence suggests that some of these structures are much older than historians are willing to admit. This book will have you questioning the official version of our story and that's a good thing. Question everything and just keep an open mind while going through the facts, that's how you find the truth.

Review

"A strength of the book is its writing style. The book is written with verve. It's playful, lighthearted, crisp, fast-paced, and yet accurate and concise. A reader can distill the basic foundations and examples of evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary theory here while enjoying the ride (read)... I would recommend the book over older popular treatments of evolutionary psychology or, say, Dawkins's 1976 classic The Selfish Gene." -Peter Gray, Human Nature"As a writer and editor of evolutionary psychology books, I am always keen to get my hands on the competition as it appears. My response to Stewart-Williams's book was 'Damn, this is good!' Frankly, whether you are advocate or detractor you should acquaint yourself with this book - love it or loathe it you will learn a lot from reading it. And you will find that reading to be a captivating, page-turning, voyage of discovery. Stewart-Williams is not only an experienced evolutionary psychologist but also a talented and insightful writer with a memorable turn of phrase... a twenty-first century successor to The Selfish Gene." -Lance Workman, The Psychologist"In The Ape that Understood the Universe, evolutionary psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams provides a masterful account of how the mind and culture evolve. Stewart-Williams is an exceptionally good writer, a witty and learned guide through challenging but exciting terrain that includes psychology, biology, anthropology, philosophy, and animal behavior. The Ape that Understood the Universe is a rare accomplishment: equal parts intellectual exhilaration and beautifully crafted narrative. Read this book for its literary grace, and learn along the way why you are an ape that can understand the universe." -Todd Shackelford, Oakland University"A great introduction to human nature - whether you're a member of our species or an alien scientist puzzled by this planet's dominant life-form. Stewart-Williams shows how genes and memes entwine to explain our deepest concerns and our highest aspirations. This fun, easy-going, science-savvy book will make you smarter about your emotions, your relationships, and your society." -Geoffrey Miller, author of The Mating Mind, Spent, and Mate"This is a highly imaginative (and solidly informed) book about the nature of human nature - who we really are. Stewart-Williams has a firm grip on the latest data in evolutionary psychology and cultural evolution, all elegantly woven into a fine narrative packed with provocative (and astute) ideas. It's an insightful, accurate and refreshingly amusing read." -Helen Fisher, author of Anatomy of Love and Why Him? Why Her?

The most exciting chapter in this book is the last where we learn that in 1976 a scientific genius named Richard Dawkins discovered that human beings have this thing called a “brain” and that this brain can generate “ideas” and other things, such as music and pictures. Naturally a new name was required to summarize this revolutionary new discovery so Dawkins called the products of the mind a “meme” and his study one of “memetics.” We then learn that these “ideas” or other memes can take on a life of their own, not because there is anything valuable about them, but just because they are so darned crafty about taking advantage of or febrile brains. For example, we hear over and over again about those annoying “earworms” which can take over our minds when we hear a catchy tune, although not so much about the evil people who create these ear worms, evildoers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Ludwig Beethoven. There is nothing really great about what they produced, they just were oh so tricky about creating such really good “earworms” that all of our gosh darned subsequent minds just can’t help but want to hear over and over, for century after century. To quote this good author: “is music a parasite that evolved to survive in the ecological niche of the human brain? Maybe so.” In short, these “earworms” are just “informational parasites” and thus “music parasitizes the brain.” Up until the last chapter I would have said that this was an interesting book that effectively summarized how evolution impacted human behavior and society, but certainly such daft “insights” as this in the last chapter made me want to re-think that conclusion.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to be introduced or reminded of how the far-reaching modern explanatory power of natural selection, evolutionary psychology, and memetics inform our understanding of ourselves and our culture. More accessible than its small font might imply, more rigorous and meticulously referenced than a superficial overview. Peppered by humor and well chosen quotations, this would be a great book for an intellectually curious young adult looking for a masterful modern summary of how the more narrowly-focused ideas they've learned in the classroom - genetics, evolution, anthropology - inform the vast understanding of human nature and culture.

This book is a very easy read. If you’re a laymen such as I, you’ll have no difficulty grasping the concepts Dr. Stewart-Williams introduces. Evolutionary psychology appears to be the original and science based gender studies. It explains why males and females act the way we do. It is the firewall against the loud post-modern campus cult of grievance studies culture. By incorporating natural observations cross-culturally and across the species, this discipline’s theories are hard to refute on a number of subjects related to what it is to be human. Dr. Stewart-Williams novel way of giving us a bird’s eye view of ourselves is entertaining and his simple language and interesting examples held my attention. I had several “eureka” moments reading this book and I highly recommend it.

This book follows the path charted by Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene" and Robert Wright's "The Moral Animal". The book covers a lot of the same material exploring evolutionary psychology with elaborate examples. Where it primarily differs from the two is in the evolutionary explanation of human behaviors (including differences between the sexes) contrasted with the 'Blank Slate' position taken by by several sociologists - the claim that human behavior including gender differences are purely a function of culture. Stewart-Williams makes a compelling argument for why the 'culture only' theory cannot be a satisfying explanation for many of the most common ubiquitous behaviors and gender differences and where an evolutionary approach is the only reasonable explanation. It's commendable how Stewart-Williams treads on the subject of gender differences - a landmine esp. in the current socio-political environment: he's uncompromising on his passionate advocacy of the evolutionary drivers of differences but balances this with the abundant caution needed to prevent readers from drawing incorrect conclusions and worse, using it as evidence to perpetuate social inequality and nullify hard won gains on that front. The final chapter on Memetics is also new territory (not covered in detail in the other two books), but lacks the readability of the rest of the book. While several reviewers find the "Alien assessment" construct instructive it didn't work for me: I was left bewildered and could not get past the assumption that a super intelligent alien would either not be a product of natural selection itself or unaware of the concept.Overall a worthwhile read - to use an idea from the book, demonstrates sufficient inclusive fitness to survive on my rather small bookshelf at the expense of some other hapless book that will now be donated to the local library.

Considering the complexity of the subject it was beautifully organized. The writer is obviously a very effective teacher, who is not afraid to use humor judiciously sprinkled throughout the book to make his points. .Has many references to other scientists in related fields. I highly recommend this book even though it may be slow going at times, but worth the effort. The best exposition of memetics I've read so far.

I usually love Vanessa Vale's books but this one was a disappointment. It was too slow and the plot along with the villain was extremely disappointing to me. The female lead made stupid mistakes. Why would you go on a practice date with someone you don't like. I don't care what kind of information I was looking to get from him especially how he acted the first time they met. It would be a big NO! I just didn't understand this book and okay I was pissed the action between the characters didn't happen until late in the book. I kept reading thinking it was going to get better and it didn't. I can't believe I am saying this but this book was a no for me. I gave 2 stars because I like the author but the rest in this series has to be better.

I normally love Vanessa Vale books, so I was really disappointed to find I didn’t enjoy this one. The pacing of the story was slow, the characters made ridiculous leaps in “solving” a mystery. In addition, there are serious plot problems that absolutely should have been caught in editing. For example, a character’s cell phone is “lost” in chapter 14. Then, the character gets an important call on the phone. Then, the phone is found by someone else where it was originally “lost.” Not normally a big deal, but since the phone plays a major part in the climax of the story, the event sequence should be correct. Overall, a disappointing effort.

This book sucked. The heroine & hero were idiots. They deserved each other. The only entertaining and redeeming qualities were the friends and family of the heroine. Throughout this book I started to question why I would buy anymore books by Vanessa Vale. Normally her books hit the right parts of sexy good times to villainous bad guys. This book needed better editing and less dicking around. As other reviewers have pointed out, why the hell would you go out with someone that you can’t stand or feel any zing of chemistry?! Jane, the heroine, proved she deserved her Darwin Award in making dumb life decisions. Ty was a typical Diana Palmer hero; weird and stubbornly sexy. I can’t get past those weird characteristics in either protagonist. There is not much more I can say about this book without it causing irreparable questions. The plot was predictable and the bad guy was a dick. The end...In the end, I finished this book. If you have any smarts, you won’t read this crap.

#DNFVery disappointed in this book. I didn't think descriptions could go to far. But when you have to describe every outfit the MIL wears it gets to be to much and EVERY little detail of the scene that's going on. But you scim over the really good and interesting parts, yeah its time to lay the book down. Someone might like that but to me it's very annoying. Stopped at 60%. So I did try to give it a chance.

I'm just not feeling this book. I love reading Vanessa Vale. The characters are good, but I'm just not feeling the chemistry. It's bland. I've not quite finished the book, but finishing it won't change my opinion at this point. I'm not sure what the book needs to be good. The elements are all there, it just isn't meshing for me.

I always enjoy a new series, and Small Town Romance starts off as a page-turner. The one thing that makes this story so different than most stories by Vanessa Vale is this is not a ménage story. What you will get is plenty of action and adventure, mystery and suspense, and a great cast of characters that will take you on a roller-coaster ride.Jane West is a widow and mother to two young sons, Zach and Bobby. Her husband was a cheater, but before their divorce was final, he died from a blood clot. Jane works with her mother-in-law, Goldie running a sex shop called Goldilocks. The patience she has with explaining sex toys to customers is entertaining, and her demonstration at a home sex toy party is a bonus too.New to Bozeman, Ty Strickland, works with the fire department and before that was in the military with two tours to the Gulf. His parents live a few hours away. The plot will have Ty coming into Goldilocks and meeting Jane, but it was for work, not as a customer. It soon is made apparent that they are also neighbors, and he has befriended her two sons. The story will revolve around a Saturday morning trip to a yard sale where each of the boys buys a yard gnome with the money from Jane. Strange things start happening days after the yard sale, with evidence that someone has been lurking in her yard, attempted theft of the gnomes from the porch, and multiple occurrences. For a once quiet lifestyle, Jane will become embroiled in strange events, and this widowed mother of two will now have two men vying for her attention.“The past few days had been—action packed. Exciting. Thrilling.”The relationship between Ty and Jane is mutual but complicated. Jane hasn’t dated even though Nate has been dead for nearly five years. Ty has commitment issues that deal with losing those close to him. So where does that leave them when there is definitely a chemistry between them? Then add in Goldie who does some crazy thing trying to push these two together.“Look, I’m more than okay with sex. That’s adventure, not excitement. A relationship, not happening. That’s more than I can handle right now. Condoms are for sex. A relationship is when you don’t use them.”--TyThe story will take on life and death situations, a man who makes demands that leaves Jane uneasy, a thief, and plenty of unanswered questions. Just when things seem to be going well for Jane and Ty, something new will set them back.“Who would have imagined my entire life would be turned upside down by two garden gnomes?”

Montana Fire is an amazing start to Vanessa Vale's new series. This book has the sexy and also brings in loads of laughs. You can't help but to fall for Jane and her boys. The mischief those 2 boys get into will have you cracking up. Jane is a phenomenal single mom. I just love how trouble starts to follow her. Ty what can I say besides hello hot firefighter. The heat that Jane is Ty create is so combustible that you can't help but fan yourself. Ty is amazing. Just wait until you meet Jane's mother in law Goldie. You will absolutely love her. I couldn't get enough of this book. It is a defiant tell your friends to one click this one. I really can't wait to see what Vanessa Vale comes up with for the rest of this series.
