Hard to give a review as have not finished reading the book. Taking my time, I find myself verifying what I read with scripture. Although I attended parochial school, I am not a Bible scholar. I find the works of Josephus fascinating. Paul Maiers's translation of the writings of Josephus enhances the events in the Old Testament. Wishing I could retain more of what I am learning from reading this translation so am sure I will be referring to it many times over. Have always been curious about the writings of Josephus and so far I am glad I picked Paul Maiers translation. Photographs, maps, illustrations......all good and a easy read.

Interesting insights on the history, thoughts, behaviors, and conflicts of the Romans and Jews in the early years of the first century. This is helpful for those who wish to get some knowledge of the time from a non-biblical perspective. Josephus' writings often confirm some of the biblical narratives.

Paul Maier is the best translator. A brilliant preamble in the front of the book describes exactly how Mr. Maier went about translating this version. Easy to understand and perfect for scholars and historians alike. I've referenced this book in several papers for my graduate degree. A must for everyone interested in Biblical Archeology, history, or how to think critically.

This is a "children's Bible," paraphrase version of Josephus. Not only are some passages omitted and summarized in brackets, but enormous blocks of content are cut out with no acknowledgement at all—including citations to Herodotus and Berosus. This book is of little to no use to anyone who wants to use Josephus for historical study, and it should be labeled a paraphrase, not mislabeled as a "translation and condensation."

Josephus offers some good insights into Biblical history

excellent review of the History of the Biblical Times

Thus far, I've been pleased with the writing style and the condensation of the works of Josephus. The translation is an easy-to-read one, and the condensation is well executed. In areas where Josephus goes into a great deal of detail on a topic (for instance, the Laws and Statutes), Paul Maier notes this in brackets, so that if one so desired, they could reference a transliteral version of the Josephus works. I'm not complete finished with the book, but thus far I've found only minor niggles (referring to the entire nation-state of Israel as "Jews" vs. the fact that the Jews were only one tribe/kingdom, which may have just been an accidental error in writing style). Again, the writing is in a modern readable style, and allows one to quickly and easily digest the works of Josephus, with the ability to reference a full word-for-word translation if one desires further detail.

Good book for those who would like to learn the history of Christian faith. Delivery was quick, price was competitive, and the book arrived in very good condition. I would definitely recommend the book to others.

Review

"Joint Winner of the 2011 Runciman Award, Anglo-Hellenic League""While Molly Greene has aimed this entertaining book primarily at the maritime historian (and she takes the word 'maritime' in the title very seriously), it is written in a style that would also appeal to the general reader of history. It adds substantially to our understanding of those who lived, worked and thieved their way around the Mediterranean Sea in the early modern period."---Michael Clark, Northern Mariner"The detailed descriptions and analyses of numerous cases taken from the files of the Tribunale degli Armamenti, which make up the bulk of the book's successive chapters, repay close reading."---Colin Heywood, International Journal of Maritime History"Greene has found wonderfully illuminating texts. . . . There is much useful material on the lives and dealings of individual merchants and consular agents across the Mediterranean."---Diana Gilliland Wright, Journal of World History"It was a happy event that led her to tell many of these stories in this book, which is scholarly, well written, and innovative--a worthy joint winner of the Runciman Award in 2011."---Michael Llewellyn Smith, Anglo Hellenic Review"The book is a great pleasure to read, both for historians and for a more general audience interested in Mediterranean history and the history of corsairs and pirates, a subject usually related to Caribbean pirates and Barbary corsairs. . . . The book offers rich material for further dialogue."---Maria Christina Chatziioannou, European History Quarterly"This book adds substantially to our understanding of those who inhabited the littoral of the Mediterranean Sea in the early modern period. At its center is the interaction between two sets of actors that have been largely overlooked in histories of the region. Greene tells a fascinating tale. Catholic Pirates and Greek Merchants fills a void in English language scholarship."--Bruce A. Masters, Wesleyan University"Catholic Pirates and Greek Merchants addresses some crucial issues in the history of the early modern Mediterranean, putting forward a strong and important thesis regarding the early modern history not only of the Mediterranean but of Europe in general. It truly represents an excellent expansion of the work Greene has already done in this field and a significant contribution to Mediterranean history."--Maria Fusaro, University of Exeter

Review

“An intricate, splendid, and utterly memorable book.”—The New York Times Book Review“Warm, human, rich with a cacophony of Indian voices, India: A Million Mutinies Now is about the passions and tragedies of a nation caught between the rush of modernity and the power of tradition. . . . An indispensable book for understanding India at the end of the 20th century.”—The Washington Post“Brilliantly penetrating and shrewd. . . . Each story, evoked by Naipaul’s sensitive and nuanced probing, reflects complexities and contradictions and gives us a glimpse, however tiny, of the mosaic totality that comprises India.”—The Chicago Tribune “Beautifully written, intellectually satisfying. . . . Naipaul is a rare combination of born narrator, who brings to life the places and people he encounters.”—Foreign Affairs“Compassionate. . . . Leaves the reader with a powerful sense of [a] people’s dedication, perseverance and passion.”—The New York Times “Travel writing, history, novel, lyric—Naipaul’s book partakes of the excellence of every category and fulfills itself in one of the oldest and rarest of forms—prophecy. It bears witness, in unforgettable language, to the best of hopes in the worst of times.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Naipaul has retired the familiar, infuriating, immobile face of India and painted a fresh one of human spirit and dramatic change.”—Time “A shifting kaleidoscope of images of a country almost impossible to imagine, but made more comprehensible due to Naipaul’s formidable intelligence and prodigious narrative gifts.”—Boston Sunday Herald “Naipaul creates his India slowly, through whole life-stories told in the characters’ own voices. . . . The detail is wonderful, built up with impeccable care.”—The Economist “[Naipaul] has invaluably revealed the brink on which India now stands, the sources of all that rage and all those little mutinies. . . . There is a powerful feeling of change in this book.”—Los Angeles Times “Compelling, almost hypnotic. . . . A rich, multilayered portrait of a nation we know far too little about in the West. You will feel you have learned much about India, yet you will sense how much more—how very much more—remains to be learned.”—Seattle Times “Authentic. . . . These narratives record, in human terms, the rich and disturbing diversity of contemporary India. . . . Extraordinary.”—Newsday “There is a great temptation to quote too much of Naipaul, for in reading the novelist, essayist and travel writer we realize the accuracy of those who consider him one of the finest writers in the language; a man with intense intellectual curiosity, as well as an inherited sympathy for inhabitants of the Third World.”—The Oregonian “A superb raga of a book, a raga of morning curiosity and evening meditation. . . . This may be [Naipaul’s] most generous work, and his best non-fiction.”—The San Diego Union-Tribune “An absorbing journey through the mind of India. . . . Mutinies will surprise those who have read and ranted at Naipaul’s earlier books on India.”—St. Petersburg Times “Brilliant.”—The Spectator (London) “In-depth. . . . Beautifully written, this book gives a personal look at the societal and political forces pushing for change in the country.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “Prescient. . . . Naipaul’s intuitions and indefatigable on-the-spot research were well ahead of the academic reaction. . . . [He is] a writer who will always be read—and not just by academics—for his intelligence and insight and for the clarity and elegance of his style.”—The Times Higher Education Supplement “One of the most intelligent writers of our time. . . . Naipaul’s word-pictures of India are lyrical, spare, precise and vivid. . . . He succeeds—brilliantly—in integrating India’s individual truths with a larger picture of the country.”—The Toronto Star

The description fails to make clear that this is a collection of essays, arranged by subject matter. Most were published originally in the New York Review of Books. Read together they result in a book choppy, turgid, and a bit repetitive in its concerns. Read individually, as originally intended, they are fine. So if you buy the book, read one at a time then put it down for a few days. These essays are forty years old now. For the most part their topics -- the nature of Indian civilization and the Indian mindset, M. Gandhi's attitudes and development, and his effect on Indian society -- remain timely. But the frequent references to the Emergency no longer have any real relevance, especially since the event is unexplained (because the NYRB's readers at the time were aware of it).

Nobel prize winner V.S. Naipaul's masterpiece on India is a must-read for any Westerner seeking a deeper understanding of India. Naipaul tells the story of this incredibly complex country person by person, through in-depth interviews of his subjects not on politics, culture or religion but on their personal lives. Naipaul tells the stories of a wide range of characters--a secretary to a prominent businessman, members of the Bombay underworld, a Marxist rebel. He tells the story of Amir, the descendant of the Raja of Mahmudabad, now living in the palace his ancestors had gotten from the British, lost after Partition, and regained after he became a successful Muslim politician in a Hindu area. And the story of Kakusthan, a modern man who returned to tradition and the life of a pure Brahmin, in a ghetto surrounded by a Muslim neighborhood. And the story of Ashok, who rejected an arranged marriage, managed to break into marketing as a career, and now struggled with the decline of the genteel, Anglo business world he had grown up in. Naipaul's great talent is in ferreting out the details of everyday life--what his people ate, wore, above all where they lived--often in tiny 10' by 10' rooms with wife and children. One comes away with a great appreciation of the notion of caste, so embedded in the society and culture for religious and non-religious alike. One also begins to appreciate what a struggle life in India is for everyone, especially those who live in cities. This book is full of stories of struggle--against tradition, to preserve tradition, between castes, between Hindu and Muslim--and of more down to earth struggles--to find a job, to find housing, to choose a career. Unfortunately Naipaul wasn't able to interview women with the ease he interviewed men--not surprising in this traditional society--and women appear only as shadowy wives and mothers in the narrative. But a great book nevertheless.

The author is very honest in his opinion. However sometimes I found him to be insensitive as he showed a tendency to undermine the feelings of people in the subcontinent in general. However, it is better to be truthful than 'politically correct'.

The country of India is of sufficient importance to all of us today that there is a real need for resources to help us develop a greater understanding, whether we are a traveler, business person working with India, or simply one interested in becoming more informed, such as myself. I don't expect that to be accomplished by only one book, so the challenge is to select a couple of volumes which together can do the job. For myself, this book is one that I have selected to help my own understanding of India.India: A Million Mutinies Now was originally published in 1990, and this edition brings it back into availability, with a new preface by the author. It is the third volume of a trilogy written by Naipaul on India, the first two being An Area of Darkness, and India: A Wounded Civilization. It does date back 20 years, and for that reason does not take into account the many developments and changes in India since that time, so if you must have something that reflects today's India in all respects, this may fall short in some ways.Author V. S. Naipaul (2001 Nobel Prize in Literature) is acclaimed both for his fiction and non-fiction. He was born in Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, to parents of Indian descent. In this book, he describes India through a series of stories covering people from many castes and different backgrounds. As these various individuals stories are told, and as you begin to grasp how they deal with the day-to-day problems of living in an overcrouded country, and surviving within the caste system still in place, you find that your understanding of India is beginning to come together. It is a long book (500+ pages), full of interesting vignettes and covering a very wide variety of individuals from all walks of Indian life.If you are considering purchase of this book, then I would also refer you to the Amazon comments to the earlier 1990 edition (India: A Million Mutinies Now), which remain valid for this new printing. As alternates or supplements to this book, I would also suggest India: A Portrait, recently issued, and I am sure that there are many others. I will continue to add to this review if I do come across other books that I feel should also be mentioned.

The Edible Flower Garden (Edible Garden Series), by Rosalind Creasy

Amazon.com Review

Author Rosalind Creasy has written extensively on edible gardens: The Edible Herb Garden and The Edible French Garden are some of her past titles. The Edible Flower Garden focuses on plants that not only enhance recipes, but also turn the plate into a painting--a visual as well as gastronomic enterprise. For the reader who thinks such things are only for true gourmets or Metropolitan Home magazine aesthetes, one look at the photographs in this book will seduce you. The images are so beautiful and unusual as to be hypnotic: rose petals served as a bowl of ice cream (Rose Petal Sorbet); salads that look like wildflower meadows. Creasy interviews Alice Waters of Chez Panisse about her use of flowers in meals at her famous Berkeley restaurant; Waters recounts the curious effect cooking with flowers has on diners. "The flowers are a fascination. People really focus on them and are curious." This curiosity stems from a cluster of superstitions: that all flowers are somehow poisonous, that beautiful things should not be touched or consumed, that vegetables are the sturdy, useful plants while flowers are "for show." Reading The Edible Flower Garden, I remembered the summer I forgot to pick my artichokes, and they basked in the sun long after they were ripe. One day I looked out and it was as if a spell had been cast: the ugly green artichoke scales were gone, transformed into blinding purple flowers. Color is always hiding somewhere, and it is wonderful to allow it to flourish, like Creasy does, in places where it is not expected. --Emily White

I have a paper copy of this book, and have really enjoyed it over the years. (I have all the books in this series, in fact.) The one thing that bugs me about it is that I live in a different climate zone to Rosalind Creasey, and things grow, and go, differently where I am.

Very nice book but.....the cover was covered in an overabundance of glue or some other spilled substance. Otherwise 5 stars but as a gift its dissatisfying to give. Too late to exchange 🙁

I have had a lot of fun with this book, both in the garden and re-assuring guests. I like to make some people nervous about digging in to a gorgeous platter of food with a few things they don't know if they are supposed to eat. Nice photographs and helpful commentary. When planning the garden for each season, this is the book I turn to for ideas about the finishing touches.

I never thought I would crave flowers, but this book has made me turn a new leaf! Another great inspiration from the Edible Garden Series. This is a valuable reference book as it provides the essentials to a successful garden in a format that is consistent and easy to read. It includes a complete encyclopedia of edible flowers with beautifully detailed photos that are good enough to eat! The photos make it easy for the beginner to learn the names of edible flowers and to easily identify all varieties. The author takes great care in listing any poisonious varieties that might be mistaken as edible. This book also contains sections on Planting and Maintenance, and Pest and Disease Control. It's an all-in-one tool. I plan to order the entire Edible Garden series. As soon as I finish one book, I'm hungry for the next!

Use what is fresh. In this case, that means the flowers too! In The Edible Flower Garden, Rosalind Creasy shares and explains the beautiful world of cooking with colorful and tasty flowers.Emphasis is given to creating gardens that will supply those flowers. It takes a lot of flowers for most recipes, so it is good to know how many of each to plant and when to harvest. While traditional herbal flowers like lavender and borage are included, there are also selections on vegetable flowers, as well as, some more unusual flowers like lilacs, apple blossoms and begonias.I particularly enjoyed Ms. Creasy's experiences with Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and the edible flower gardens they create to supply fresh flowers for their world renowned restaurant.Of course, the beautiful photos of the Edible Flower Canapes, the Pineapple Sage Salsa and the Rose Petal Sorbet weren't bad either.

This is a beautiful book to look at. And for a beginner it has some very useful information. But for me I was looking for a a more complete source of information. Will probably pass it on as a present to someone just getting started in using flowers in cooking.

Just the info I need to add more edible flowers to my Square Foot Garden plots. Very good descriptions and planting tips. Lots of beautiful pictures of the flowers in the garden. Recipes are great additions. I have a friend who owns a sweets bakery, and I am thinking of trying some of these out with her.

There are some great recipes in here. Some of these flowers I knew were edible, other may surprise you.

From the Back Cover

The first history of the legendary knights since the Vatican momentously released the records of their trial and exonerationWho were the Templars? What was the secret of their wealth and power? Why did the pope and the king of France act to destroy them? The Knights Templar were founded on Christmas Day 1119, on the very spot in Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was crucified. A religious order of fighting knights, the Templars defended the Holy Land and Christian pilgrims in the decades after the First Crusade. Legendary for their bravery and dedication, the Templars became one of the wealthiest and most powerful bodies of the medieval world—until they were condemned for heresy two centuries after their foundation, when the order was abolished and its leaders were burned at the stake. In The Templars, renowned historian Michael Haag investigates the origins and history, the enduring myths, and the soaring architecture of an enigmatic order long shrouded in mystery and controversy. The hand of the Templars, many believe, can be found in everything from Cathar heresy to Masonic conspiracies, and the Knights Templar still inspire popular culture, from Indiana Jones to Xbox games, to the novels of Dan Brown.

Michael Haag caused me to re-think many of my preconceptions of the Templars, most specifically their mythical connection to the Freemasons. "The Templars" is chock-full of well-written, easy-to-understand (and absorb), documented history of the ill-fated Knights Templar. Mr. Haag provides sufficient history from all sides of the religious and political equation, Christianity (more specifically, European Catholicism), Islam, Judaism, and others, to fully understand how the Templars came into being, what they did, why they did it, and the results therefrom. I found it to be most enjoyable, most informative, and extremely thought-provoking. I recommend this book to any person with an interest in the Templars and their activities.

Allow me to address my dislike first. It is wordy and very comprehensive, at times I felt like I was having a tooth pulled. Expect to take about 8 hours to read through this book. Now for the likes. It is comprehensive with plenty of backbone to sink your teeth into. He does an excellent attempt to bring the Templars to life with documented historical facts. He addresses how and when much of the fantasy, myth, and mystery around the Templars were created. In the final portion of the book you will find details of books, sources, and online sources that will bring you back to this book as a reference for many months if not years to come.

This survey of the history of the Templars is very readable. However, much of the book concerns events in the Middle East from Biblical times through the Crusades. Yet not one map identifying the many locations discussed is included in the book. Also, although there is an index, it refers to page numbers, not the Kindle locations. Finally, the first quarter of the book concerns the Middle East before the Crusades, and almost half of the book concerns debunked conspiracy theories, descriptions of locations etc. which may not be of much interest to anyone who is simply desirous of learning about the Templars.

Excellent read. I like the well-rounded history of all that influenced the time. Everything that lead to the establishment of the KT, their influences, the true circumstances of their demise, and their influences to this day. The only knock I have is that it would've been nice to see maps of the areas, rather than imagine. I wound up looking on the internet for some of the places. Either way, a great read, and answered all my questions.

I have to admit this: I got halfway through this book and decided that I had learned enough about the Knights Templar. I learned some fascinating history from a different angle about the era 1099 to 1351 A.D.. I had no idea that the Holy Lands were occupied for such a stretch by Europeans; didn't know how disciplined the Templars were nor how many people it took to serve one knight (twenty-seven). Didn't know that the Crusades and the Templars were named later, that these pilgrimages to the Holy Land brought commerce to towns along the route--and marauders hence the Templars. That the papacy missed that Islam wasn't just one more heresy. I just couldn't take all the slaughter. After quite a few reports of the carnage I got the picture. (The book is on my Kindle so if I'm somewhere and want to dip back into this world I'll read a bit more.) I did enjoy the author's academic perspective. He gleaned his information from several sources, if possible, and discussed sketchier stories. For example, he says that the claims that Mary Magdalene came to France were fabrications to draw tourists to the area. Apparently, tourism is as old as human existence.

I liked the first 3 quarters of the book approximately. But after that it gets too much into the conspiracy theories that arose after the Templars had long disappeared; in other words all the false stories that were written about the Templars. I didn't get into a feeling of being a holy knight on a crusade in the book. Nonetheless the book deserves its four stars from the interesting facts I learned about how the crusades would have failed long before they did were it not for the Templars (and the Hospitalers).

For those who want to know the real history of the Knights Templar, and not the silly Dan Brown-type nonsense, this book is highly recommended. It is a little repetitive at times, or at least it feels this way when read on a Kindle, but my impression is that Michael Haag is a much more professional, impartial and genuine scholar and historian than 90% of those who have written on the subject. By the end of the book one despairs of any resolution in the Middle East after millennia of conflict, by Haag does end the book with an added bonus for those who, like me, would one day want to visit the "Holy Land:" a delightful description of all the remaining castles and locations of importance, with guides for where to go when one gets there.

Great book. Explains a lot about what's going on in the World today. I've read a lot about the Templars in many different books. This book puts it all in one place.
