The craft of signwriting has seen a resurgence over the past 10 years with many fine examples on shop fascia boards and windows, inns and restaurant signs and awnings and banners. At the same time many colleges started teaching signwork again, in its demand for a new generation of crafts people. When the book appeared in 1984 it was the first to be published on the subject for over 20 years and was widely welcomed. It deals not only with signwriting but also with gilding, glass decorating, and small-run screen printing. It offers advice on drawing letters and on heraldry, as well as on the production of signs, including materials, their fixing and cost. The glass decoration section us unique and details the traditional methods of producing, French embossed and acid toned glass. Bill Stewart was Deputy Head of the Crafts Department at Hammersmith and West London College, where he was responsible for preparing the college’s signwork course. He was a prime mover in preparing the City & Guilds syllabus in signwork and launching the national examination. He is joint author of Painting and Decorating: An Information Manual

Some decent info on Roman Letter forms in the beginning. Then the book goes through of tons of (useless to me) info which leaves me wondering whether there is time barrier or cultural barrier. It seems the author was a sign painter in England (i believe) and I found things to be way different in the U.S. First off, I don't size brushes up as either a "goose" or a "swan". This book also has all that useful info most other books have about running a business and how to set up safe scaffolding. Give me a break. I gave it 2 stars only because there are very few "sign painters" books available, it should be lower a guess.
I've got a few different books on sign craft and this book covers many aspects of production. I've never seen one cover so many aspects. From letter form to how light affects color, it's pretty a wide range of topics. This gets to the core of the fundamentals and traditional sign making. The content is presented in a very well structured and easy to read way. The British view on sign painting is also very interesting and makes me think about the craft from a different perspective. Great illustrations as well.
