I've been cooking from the first edition of this book for years, since it first came out. It's the most popular cookbook in my house, hands down. I even use it to supplement other recipes when I'm cooking. Ottolenghi's Jerusalem is another favorite, but when the flavors need a little extra punch, I come back to the Gaza Kitchen. The maqlouba is a staple; when I make it for dinner parties, the cameras come out every single time. The cauliflower/beef stew with the tahina option is my personal all-time favorite. And the shrimp stew is always a huge hit.If you like mediterranean or middle eastern food at all, you will love this cookbook!

This book has a wealth of excellent recipes! In addition to that, it is full of very interesting cultural and historical facts and insights which are peculiar to Gaza and its unique cuisine. It is a vivid testimony to the resilience of Gaza Palestinians, in particular, that they use every conceivable (and inconceivable!) method to brighten and add spark to all aspects of their highly restricted lives, including their celebratory cuisine! I agree with Anthony Bordain, that it "is an egregiously unappreciated, under-reported area of gastronomy.....old school in the best meaning of the term!" I am especially favorably impressed with the authors' efforts to accurately portray the Gaza story without seeming whining, which, for sure they could do! I am convinced that it is through fully human communication of this kind that this troubled world shall one day know peace. Thank you, Laila el-Haddad and Maggie Schmitt for this wonderful contribution!

On the recipes themselves:This is an awesome, well-compiled collection of authentic Gazan home-cooking. The selections range from drinks and desserts to salads and main courses and include both local specialties and recipes common to all of the Levant. None of the recipes are particularly difficult to make and many of them are actually quite simple. Additionally, the fact that the book shows you how to make / recommends substitutes for the more "exotic" ingredients is incredibly helpful for anyone that doesn't live near a specialty market.On the rest of it:The book beautifully summarizes many of the ongoing issues in the Gaza Strip: the struggles of local farmers and fisherman, reliance on the tunnel system for basic goods, and the difference between availability and affordability. Additionally, when it comes to the women of Gaza, the authors largely step out of the picture and let the women present their own stories. The weaving of these narratives in and out of the recipes movingly highlights the role of cooking and the home in Gaza and presents narratives of food and family that will resonate will almost anyone.

I have spent extensive time in Gaza many years ago and was very happy to see the foods I ate there compiled within this amazing book. Congrats on such an outstanding book on the recipes and all the culture within Gaza. After reviewing it I immediately purchased another one for a friend and plan to buy more for gifts. Thank you for writing this cook book Mrs. El-Haddad.

Great cookbook! My only complaint is that the recipes don't list the number of servings or how many/how much each recipe/batch makes. That makes it hard to gauge how much you're making the first time through. I often cook for my extended family, so it's nice to know if I need to double the recipe.

Beautiful, sumptuous pictures, cultural information. Detailed recipes that are fabulous. The cooking of Gaza is different from the cooking of the West Bank. If you like Arabic food, it is a treasure, and would make a great present. Absolutely nothing else like it exists.

I love this cookbook, some wonderful recipes, and some unusual ones that are particularly from this area, I have other Palestinian Cookbooks, but this one is just for the Gaza strip, and I highly reccomend it.

I love learning to cook, and finding this book on Anthony Bourdain's show on CNN I ordered it like it was nothing.I have tried a couple of recipes. I say I could and I mean just that Two. I could try more buy my exhusband took it home so he can try some of the recipes. Jerk…lol

3.5 StarsSeventeen year old Marcelo (pronounced "Marselo") is described as having an "autism-like" condition. That's as close as doctors can come to defining his unique gift of being able to hear music where no one else can. Unfortunately for Marcelo, his father doesn't see anything particularly rare or special about his son's gift. Instead, the father pushes Marcelo to take a job in the mailroom of his law firm --- dad's reasoning being that the position will teach Marcelo useful skills about "the real world" and put him on the path to success, rather than let his mind run away with creative dreamer fancies.Once in the mailroom environment, Marcelo meets and befriends the lovely Jasmine and Wendell, the son of one of the partners at the law firm. As his father anticipated, the first days were an experience for Marcelo, to say the least, as another "autism-like" trait that Marcelo displays is a struggle with interpreting facial expressions. But thanks to classes Marcelo attends to help him learn tips & tricks to help him out with this (instruction in voice inflection, speech patterns, and the like), it actually doesn't take him too long to find his way. It's a tough time for the reader though. We have to watch Marcelo navigate around co-workers who assume he's mentally incompetent, or those who try to bully or take advantage of him because he can't immediate recognize that he is being tricked. This is the "real world" his father so desperately wanted him to be a part of... thanks, dad!Marcelo develops a love for religious texts and often turns to reading or reciting scripture to himself to calm his nerves when the world starts to overwhelm him. At one point, he finds himself unexpectedly caught up in one of his father's most important legal cases, one that will push Marcelo to fight for what he believes in, regardless of what others around him might say.After being published in 2009, in 2010 this novel was awarded the Schneider Family Book Award for Teen Fiction, an award that recognizes fiction that focuses on characters with disabilities.I've come across pages of glowing reviews for this one, and while I did very much enjoy it, I can't comfortably join the 5 star crowd here. The story had some dents for me. I loved Marcelo, the way his mind worked and his unique style of interacting with others even if he didn't (admittedly) always understand all the unspoken social cues. Something in that I found myself relating to quite a bit. His friendship with Jasmine is sweet & lovely and I found myself wishing he and Wendell could get on a bit better. So the characters undeniably spoke to me on some level. My trouble was with the writing. Some of the characters came off just a little too weirdly staccato in their speech and mannerisms for my enjoyment. The flow of things just felt a shade off from natural. In Marcelo's case it's understandable and almost expected, given that he's been diagnosed with a "autism-like" condition, but that doesn't explain the other characters!Also, if I'm being honest with my reading experience... there was just something a little... lackluster maybe?... with the plot as a whole, as far as pace and plot action. I was all about this story in the early pages! Those first few chapters definitely had me hooked. But this was one of those books where I could feel my love and interest of it slowly trickling down instead of racing up. Reading pages on end and then realizing later, "you know, that was actually a whole lotta nothing going on"... and the book's not even that long! Still, I did quite like Stork's message here -- the way Marcelo finds his own voice in a sea of so many others telling him what he needs or what he should do --- it made me curious to try out some of Stork's other works just to compare, so I now have a couple on order. Even with the elements I myself found problematic, I would still solidly recommend this to anyone looking for YA reads featuring the theme of autism and enhanced abilities.

This is a story of courage, growth, and faith. Marcelo is high functioning autistic , and the story is told through his eyes. It was neat to get a glimpse of how his thought process works. He bravely leaves the sheltered environment of his special school to work a summer job in his father's law office--The real world. There he learns about love, hate, sin, forgiveness, and faith. I was drawn to Marcelo from the first and rooting for him to make it. This is an interesting, deep, and rewarding story of facing the unpleasantness in life head on and overcoming in spite of it. I highly recommend it.

I was assuming this book would be about the struggles an autistic teen faced when forced out of his comfort zone--but it was so so much more. Instead of the surface-level day-to-day struggles the main character faced, which I had expected, the author surprised me by forcing him to deal with much more difficult issues such as moral dilemmas, which is a true struggle for someone with autism who tends to view things as strictly black and white, having trouble processing things that fall into a gray area. It was apparent hat Stork must have known someone (or several someones) personally who have struggled with this disorder in order to be able to write from the main character's POV without painting a stereotyped, stock character. This was very well done.

Marcelo is a teen with Aspergers, attending a private school for kids with special needs, and looking forward to his next year when he’ll work with the ponies. But that’s not the plan his father has in mind, and Marcelo must leave the safety of his school for the minefield that is his father’s law office.What I enjoyed most about this story was the characterization. Stork does a masterful job of fleshing out all of them, not just the main players. And he does so with subtlety. You come to know Aurora through small actions—a look, a comment, a note of support for her son. Juliet is a hard nut of a secretary with little kindness, but she’s efficient, so she’s an asset to the firm and you know where you stand with her. It’s when she and Jasmine go toe-to-toe that you “meet and know" very well, too. And then there’s Wendell who is rather a stereotypical little rich boy with few scruples and ready to take advantage of anyone if allowed.I found Jasmine to be the strongest of characters in the book. I envied her clear vision of right and wrong, which was exactly what Marcelo needed as he worked his way through the real world’s moral shades of gray. Stork injects both pathos and humor for his characters throughout the book, so you must care for them all in some way.Stork’s language is perfect. And I fell into the story a lot of times because I was enjoying the way he revealed Marcelo. Here’s one of my favorites. “In some way, the strange-looking streets are simply a reflection of my thoughts. It seems perfectly natural to be lost outside when that’s the way I am inside. No landmarks anywhere.”I was least satisfied with the ending. I didn’t want a neatly wrapped up ending with the rotten guys punished and good guys rewarded, but I wanted one beat more. For example, I wanted to see Wendell again without his privileged smirk. But overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

One of my favorite reads this year. The writing was smooth, flowing, funny, charming, yet poignant. It didn't lose any depth for its entertainment value. The story unfolded in a thoughtful way that didn't underestimate its audience or the protagonist. This was my first Francisco Stork read, and I'm now a fan. If his other works are like this, then I'm sold. It's one of those books that flowed so smoothly and kept me so engaged that I read it quite fast. I just enjoyed being with the main character. That's a bit winner for me.

Jim Marrs is a pretty level-headed investigator who is willing to go after hidden truths. In this book, however, he pretty much surveys current popular topics being discussed on the AboveTopSecret.com website. Each chapter is about 7 pages or so, just hitting the highlights of the topic, unlike most of Marrs' books, which dig pretty deep into a single topic. In a way, this is a promotion for the website, where you might find other, or more current info on each topic. However, the author is pretty good at adding in particular truths that he personally has dug up on several of the topics, and that adds noticeably to the value of the book. He has researched some of the topics extensively, and so he is in a good position to give an overview. Being a recent book helps, since some of the topics (e.g. UFO stuff) have much more data available now than in the '90's, for example. In all, solid coverage of quite a few important topics to get you started if you did not know about some of these (and I did not, for example). For those out there who realize that American mainstream media are thoroughly controlled, and that the US government is very secretive about certain topics, this gives an overview of some important issues. I personally prefer to be informed, rather than bamboozled.

Jim is a great author, and absolutely one of the best in this genre. There is no doubt, and maybe he is the best on the planet. This book was not his best though. He has done far better. Above Top Secret was the title to a book by Timothy Good written on UFO disclosures that I read around 1991. I think Jim would have been better not to use that title. But that is just me. But read Jims other books, as I have read them too, and they are brilliant! But if one is beginning in this genre, then this books is likely a good one to start with, and maybe that is his market here. For that it is really good.

I am a skeptic, especially on what the mass media gives us such huge doses each day. I usually take the stance that whatever I am fed I believe the opposite. Jim Marrs gives much more plausible explanations backed up with lots of facts. Also he lets you know if it is just a theory and can be proved. Can't go wrong with his books if you are a seeker of truth.

Nice wrap up of some of the biggest mysteries... wanted more! I was surprised when I got to the end and felt as though I'd missed the end somehow

Excellent reviews of a vast assortment of subjects that make you think. Question what is out there, think critically and listen to all info.

Usually like Marrs' stuff but this one reminded me of some of the half-assed high school assignments I turned in. Just a rehash of a website, c'mon Jim....

I struggle to find the right analogy. It's also like a key or a code, or a single letter, which, because it is connected to all other letters, implies everything. Given its subject matter, the relation of all to all, it’s a short book at 800+ pages. And yet, it does manage to illuminate everything. This really is vision logic, in which the relations between seemingly separate, yet interpenetrating holons, are clearly seen and disclosed.I first encountered Wilber’s thought maybe 25 years ago, with “No Boundary.” The shocking freshness and simplicity-in-complexity is still very much present in his writing. At times over these years, pursuing meditation practice, I’ve sometimes felt his exposition too much, resonating with the “ah ya, the old mapmaker…” critique, as if the headiness of having it all spelled out was somehow onerous. But that was really just my small-mindedness. We need different things at different times. Today after finishing listening to the book on Audible (nicely done) I feel only enormous gratitude that Ken Wilber has done this work with his life. What an amazing example for us. What a powerful shout down from the upper reaches of human development and a ladder up for all us climbers hanging, sometimes by a nail.I think every person who can, should read this book. It is replete with exceedingly rich insights, like a definition of truth that surpasses even the Mahayana Buddhism's union of the ultimate and the relative—quite a feat, that, which made my mind vibrate with joyful recognition—but even more than that, it is psycho-active, in that whatever level of psycho-spiritual growth you have yet achieved, it will enzymatically accelerate that growth by creating necessary connections and opening up unseen frontiers. If you are open to its medicine.Now, this sounds like an absurd sales pitch, and yet…I believe it. It’s some kind of medicine. So here's my final praise: After listening to the book, I just bought the text so that I can immediately start to (re)read it, take notes, and try to more fully digest and put it into practice. I want these enzymes operating in my system. Thank you Ken Wilber!

Ken Wilber managed with The Religion of Tomorrow to explain Integral Theory and the Fourth Turning for all spiritualities in accessable language. He notes that Eastern spirituality is focused on WAKING UP while Western thought is about GROWING UP - and only for the past 100 years or so. Integral Theory combines the two and ads two more: CLEANING UP and SHOWING UP. The Buddha, for instance, was enlightened but only at the mythic level - thus ethnocentric. While Being has "no moving parts", Becoming has and that is where the GROWING UP is taking place. One cannot be aware of one's structural stage. It is only when "the subject of the lower stage becomes the object of the subject of the next stage" that one can look back and by being made aware of the content (aqs object) of the level one is at, that you can understand why you act in a certain way and believe certain things.I know about the criticism of Wilber's take on evolution and the 2nd and 3rd tier developments, but it will not take away the importance of the content of this book.I am also listening to the book on Audible (all 30 hours), reading it on Kindle and and on hardcover - great investments.

For many years after my return from Vietnam, I searched for a way and a means to try and restore my peace and my sanity. Something that could help me make sense of what I had just experienced. I went down many paths, self destruction and denial being the longest running. I made attempts at finding answers through many means, none of them were right and I knew it in my heart. i struggled with depression, self-medication and a feeling that something needed to be right in my soul, i thought that i had lost a piece of myself. One day I entered a public library not knowing what I was really looking for, no real purpose in mind. As I walked the aisles my eyes locked on a book with concentric blue circles. I can only say that I was drawn to it, I knew instinctively there was something important about it. I opened it randomly and settled on a paragraph from a paper and began to read. Immediately and without a doubt I knew I was reading truth. Its hard to describe the feeling that went thru me, It was like slowly dying from thirst and suddenly being saved by a clear cool spring. I read no more than that first paragraph and immediately went to the counter and checked it out. When I arrived home, I opened it and began to read, what I found was so profound and so intense I realized there was no way I could ever complete this book in the normal 2 week check out time.. I then went to the contact information, called the foundation and ordered my own copy. I believed I needed to start at the beginning which I did and read every written word. I have fairly rapid reading skills yet I could not read more than a few paragraphs at a time without falling asleep totally exhausted by the effort. It took me one year to finish the book reading it nearly every day. Almost all of what I read seemed nearly incomprehensible to me at the time but I knew instinctively that it was truth. By the time I had finished it I realized I had read the most profound book of my life ... and yet I felt as if I had hardly absorbed it at best. I immediately went back to the beginning and began reading it all over again, the second time it took approximately 6 months to complete, I began to understand more and more as time and pages went by. That was many years ago now and I read a paper or a portion of one from the website every day. The reading of the Urantia Book is a life journey, to become a part of your everyday existence. I think of portions of it at all hours of the day, often times as I wake each morning. To say it changed my life would be an understatement. Some of you will find it to be the same.

This book took me over two years to read. The 1st thousand pages required a lot of concentration in order to understand the complexity of the content of God and the universe. I read many books in the meantime. I would read a Paper (chapter), or part of one, and have something else to turn to (The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, La mano de Fatima, La Catedral del mar, Dime quien soy, The Physician, among others). All in all, the entire book was a fascinating learning experience, a journey of discovering so much that I had never imagined the possibility of existing. It has made everything that I did know about history and religion so much clearer, and it explained things that never made sense to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has read it and I wish one of my friends or colleagues would so that I could discuss it with someone. It was the learning experience of a lifetime, and has profoundly changed me. I will always be grateful to the person who recommended it to me, one of my students who died last year at the age of 25, who I know is on his journey to perfect himself, even as God is perfect.

This Book is the most profound compilation of wisdom and truth that one could ever read. It brings together truth from all across the world and it's major religions throughout our worlds entire history. Its basically an encyclopedia for truth and spiritual wisdom. But even then it's so much more. You could read and re-read it for an entire life and still be only at the beginning of what it offers. What it offers is living truth. The entire book is about universe reality (love) and how we can grow and become empowered in and through it. It is a journey into the endless river of truth, beauty and goodness. A journey that once begun, words begin to fail for descriptive purposes of just what this book really is, as it is so much more than just a book. It answers pretty much any and every question one could ever think of. If questions such as, who are we? how old is the world? why are we here? where are we going after this life? who were Adam and Eve really? did we evolve from animals? whats the purpose/meaning/value of life? ever crossed your mind then this book should be on your must read list. If you believe in Jesus and wanted to discover more about Him, His loving and merciful nature and wonderful plans for you, this book is definitely for you. Even if you don't but are spiritual and or seeking truth, you wont find a more enlightening manuscript anywhere. It supports no particular religion but shows us how to find and draw out the truth, beauty and goodness within them all and encourages each of us to develop a personal relationship (religion) with the indwelling spirit fragment of God living and loving within each and every one of us. It's nickname is the "Truth Book" and for very good reason. The tough part for many is the faith it takes to believe it really is a "Revelation" written by the Angels above us. I have read it and am wholeheartedly convinced it was. It either was or wasn't but if there is supposedly a book on earth written by angels wouldn't you want to read it for yourself and be the judge? Trust me there is no way a human being could write like this and you will feel that inside of you after reading just one page if not one paragraph?! Over one million words and not a single contradiction or inconsistency. It doesn't exclude -it includes, all of us, as we are all children of the same God-Father-Creator and we may call Him whatever we wish, He loves us all and has never revealed Himself by name only nature. If you are on a spiritual journey and wish to discover more of the true and loving nature of God, I encourage you with all my heart take the chance and the time and you will be forever grateful.....May God bless you in all your strivings!

I've used Genki and Nakama, but I absolutely love Genki. I've used it in class and on my own. The terms are useful and the grammar is easy to understand. Would recommend for people who are in class and need the book, or people who are self-taught Japanese students.For those of you who are self-taught, it might be a good idea to get the workbook or at least do all of the activities and use a key or the CDs to check your answers.

I began studying Japanese language with the orange Genki book, four semesters ago. I find this the best text on the market. I am now entering my 5th semester and ready to take on the green book.The book is laid out in an easy to follow style beginning with a dialogue, new vocabulary, and grammar points. In the last half of the chapter there are drills that help you with each grammar point. In the back there are kanji drills and other useful language phrases and situational tips. The text is clear and easy to follow. This is a comprehensive language course.I highly recommend this text.

I've tried many things, Rosetta Stone,Internet help web sites, audio tapes, almost everything you can imagine to learn japanese. But the Genki textbooks are what has really worked for me. If you put enough time and energy into dedicating yourself to studying the books material. You will definitely be on a good start with your journey into learning Japanese. I do wish there was a book 3.

This book is amazing as for learning Japanese. I got this book for my class and it does helps out a lot. They way they integrate English into japanese makes it so much easier to understand. It really helps me put my sentences together as I write or speak it, which is a plus for me or anyone willing to learn. I would also recommend the first book as well so it can get you prepared for this version.

Got to speak the Japanese I learned from Genki for a lot of situations in Japan recently, people love it when you don't have to use hand signals and stare at them confused like a deer in headlights. Great stuff, buy it.

Had to have this for my second level university class and it is a very nice book. With this and the work book, it is perfect of class or self teaching. I am using this to help teach my sister and it is very nice in explaining different concepts of the language

I bought this during my first year class and it helped me get through so much! If you’re just starting out on Japanese, I definitely recommend getting this book on top of the required book!

Worth the money, and dont just rely on this book purchase or same series. Learn from others sources as well to become well rounded out.
