I heard Joseph Grenny, one of the authors speak on this topic recently at the leadership summit and got a lot out of his session.All of us know the feeling of this kind of conversation and we know that this is where life changes.Here are 10 things I got from the book that I have found helpful in my life and leadership:1. When we face crucial conversations, we can do one of three things: We can avoid them, We can face them and handle them poorly, or We can face them and handle them well. At the heart of almost all chronic problems in our organizations, our teams, and our relationships lie crucial conversations—ones that we’re either not holding or not holding well. Christians and church staffs are notorious for avoiding crucial conversations. This is why churches often split, people leave hurt and visions never move forward. Instead of doing the hard work in a conversation, they are avoided. When in reality, because of what is at stake (salvation) and because of the calling of Jesus, we should do a better job of having crucial conversations.2. Individuals who are the most influential—who can get things done and at the same time build on relationships—are those who master their crucial conversations. We all know this to be true. If you aren't very good at dialogue, you sit back in wonder at those who are. They are able to gain more influence, get more done and people want to be on their team and a part of what they are doing. This is why raising the value of this skill and getting better at it matters so much. Things move forward or stop around conversations.3. The mistake most of us make in our crucial conversations is we believe that we have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend. Grenny said this at the summit and it grabbed my attention. This is one of, if not the main reason, most conversations stop and things do not move forward. Fear. Fear of a relationship ending, something stopping, getting fired or hurting someone. Yet, if we don't tell the truth, we often can't be a friend.4. People rarely become defensive simply because of what you’re saying. They only become defensive when they no longer feel safe. The problem is not the content of your message, but the condition of the conversation. If you are a boss and want honest feedback and conversation, people can't fear for their jobs or that you will yell at them. Recently, there has been a lot of writing online about pastors abusing people, creating a culture of fear, yelling at staff members, elders and volunteers and it blows my mind. If you are known for that as a pastor, you should be embarrassed.5. Be careful not to apologize for your views. This can be easy to do and it often happens as a way to soften your opinion or the blow in a conversation, but you shouldn't apologize for what you think. It is what you think. It might be hard or unpopular to say, but don't shy away from it. You may be wise to change how you phrase it, but always be willing to share what you think in a conversation.6. One of the ironies of dialogue is that, when talking with those holding opposing opinions, the more convinced and forceful you act, the more resistant others become. I done this very easily in the past. Yet, this practice keeps people from buying in and helping to make something happen. When we do this, we don't understand why people aren't on board. The reason is the harder we push our way, the harder they push their way.7. Speaking in absolute and overstated terms does not increase your influence, it decreases it. The converse is also true—the more tentatively you speak, the more open people become to your opinions. The more harshly we speak or the more we give the impression that there is only one way, the less likely it becomes that people will speak up. Now, on issues like vision, it must be clear and have agreement. But, in conversations, if we give the impression that something has been decided or that we aren't open to suggestions, we will kill discussion.8. When we feel the need to push our ideas on others, it’s generally because we believe we’re right and everyone else is wrong. This is another way the previous one. If you find yourself pushing your ideas, you aren't having a good dialogue and instead are simply giving out orders. That may be your leadership style, but it won't accomplish a healthy team environment and in the end, your church or business will never reach its full potential.9. The more you care about an issue, the less likely you are to be on your best behavior. As a leader or a person in a relationship, you must learn this well. This was an eye opening insight for me. I get very passionate about things, as most people do, and when I do, I can shut down dialogue and end up hurting people. We do this, often unintentionally because we care about something, because we believe we are right and have the only way forward.10. The fuzzier the expectations, the higher the likelihood of disappointment. When a crucial conversation ends, there must be clear expectations and guidance moving forward. It cannot be fuzzy or gray. Otherwise, a conversation has not ended, it is simply on pause.All in all, this was an incredibly helpful book. Some of it covered things I already knew but showed some helpful insights. I've already seen a change in some of my conversations with leaders at my church and in my family through this book. Definitely one I'd recommend.

As a woman, I wish I would have read this book years ago. I would have been better prepared to ask for promotions and been a better listener as a mother. I've purchased 7 books as gifts for college-aged kids. I wish I would have known about this book years ago. It's a book that you can re-read many times and still gain tips to help you through crucial conversations.

I ordered this book because it seemed useful and I could see one of my friends behaving differently. I bought this in mind that a big storm was coming. I have made mistakes during emotionally charged conversations/arguments before and didn't want to go down the same path again. Not too soon after I purchased it, that friend brought the storm.I took my time to read this and skim over it again before I entered the conversation because I didn't want to go in feeling attacked, defensive, or angry. I wanted to know how I could handle things. I didn't want to talk and head into a storm in the first place, but reading this book helped me feel less apprehensive about talking. I didn't want to go in ready to fight, I took my time talking on my own terms because I didn't want to lose my friend while feeling hot-headed. I explained my intentions on why I took long to not give off the impression that I didn't care.The book took me about 6 hours to read but I didn't really count. I flagged many pages to the point when I almost ran out of flags. There were very few parts I skipped towards the end (of examples/possible scenarios that I didn't think related to me), but most of the book seemed very relevant. The many examples helped. I think as a reader it helps to take written/typed notes of your own as you go, but I did not take much (I will though).When I felt I was ready to talk, I went in. I tried utilizing what I remembered. I did look at the smaller details to address them and tried not playing "trivia pursuit" on things that that were brought up. I got more of my friend's perspective. After we talked about our concerns, we found our misunderstandings and similarities regarding situations, as well as our viewpoints on both. I also brought up some possible agreements on how to avoid disrespecting each other in the future and if we did, the topic is left open so we can revisit our misunderstandings or perspectives again without making an ultimatum and to communicate more healthily if we think something is off between us. I didn't want to just get things off our chest, I wanted to make it easier for us to communicate in a similar manner (finding solutions) in the future. I wouldn't have gotten to this point if it weren't for this book. I honestly was prepared to lose a friend and in that scenario, none of us wins because we learned nothing about ourselves and others, we only saw our own viewpoints. By the end of our conversation, my friend seemed satisfied. We both have our similarities, though we handled things differently, this book played a part in bringing things up to light and how to go about it.There are other things I am going to work on tackling, such as things in the workplace and not in my personal life and hope it turns out okay for everyone too.I only read this once and skimmed it once after that, yet it helped me get this far. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better at such conversations and arguments. It's worth rereading, not a read-once-and-drop-it kind of book.

I struggle with communicating effectively. As I considered my professional development plan for the year, I knew this was an area I wanted to focus on. This book is the most loving guide to caring for aging parents that I have ever read. I experienced all of the stages, though in warp speed, when my wonderful mother became ill at 82 and died just three months later. Years in healthcare and helping others in this process did not prepare me for my own loss and my mother's passing. Dr. McCullough's advice to be vigilant, compassionate, and respectful during the natural process of life nearing the end of itself was very timely. His insightful and life-affirming attention called to the compensation made by elders to difficulties encountered during the aging process was so valuable and so loving. It has made me conscious that my own first response to my mother's perfectly appropriate adaptation to her own life changes was to "rush in", instead of standing back in amazement at the natural sequence of her acceptance in her preparation for what was to come. We have so come to expect and to hope that modern medicine and endless physician appointments and re-hospitalizations will "make things right." All done out of fear and hopefulness, but the outcome, nevertheless, is the same, and we have missed opportunities for acceptance and to appreciate the qualities from the wisdom that comes with age. The lessons will help me to observe and anticipate the "stations" of late life, and to prepare and support. The author so eloquently and so lovingly shared with all of us a lifetime of careful caring for people, to include his own lovely mother, and he obviously loved doing so. This book has given me life lessons that will never leave; it should be mandatory reading for all in the healthcare field.

Found this book may have been difficult to write and it shows up in some of the awkward flow of ideas in some places. At many places though, the flow is very good. The author breaks down the various stages of degeneration of health in old age and lists tasks loving family members and other caring people can do to try and stay one step ahead of the needs. He speaks extensively of slow medicine, a style of care he encourages. The book is specific and vague at the same time, hard to describe, wished he'd been more specific in some places mostly. A good book to start your thinking, more focused for a beginner approaching the planned care of an elder as they fail in health. The tough decisions are all still there, you just get a framework within to make those decisions.

If I had an unlimited amount of cash, I would buy thousands of copies of MY MOTHER, YOUR MOTHER. Here's who I'd give them to:Every doctor, nurse, aide, medical assistant, physical and occupational therapist, specialist, psychologist, counselor, social worker, medical insurance person, Medicare and medicaid worker, pharmacist, physician's assistant....I'd give a copy to every medical student, dentist, lab tech, optometrist, and to every adult with a parent over the age of 50, with any relative or friend in frail health. I'd give it to my neices and nephews, my mailman, the funeral director over on Main Street...You get the idea.MMYM is practical and wise. Dr. McCullough returns something we mistakenly handed to modern medicine: how to care for our loved ones, and be part of their lives during their frail final years.

My daughter recommended this book, and it was very timely since my own mother is 88 and has gone through some of the experiences the author describes. This is both frightening and reassuring. Frightening because the path ahead looks difficult; reassuring because knowing that what we are going through is similar to what other people are going through is helpful. The author makes his points by telling stories from his practice as a family physician and also as the son of an aging, and eventually dying, mother. His advice is both philosophical (his advocacy of what he calls "Slow Medicine") and practical. As a physician himself he is in a good position to offer advice on how to work with the medical establishment rather than at cross purposes with it. If you have an elderly loved one, are approaching elder status yourself, or both, this compassionate book will help you navigate your own trip up the mountain.

Living in a community for persons 60 and older as well as being active in Hospice care this book provides much food for thought. The concept of slow medicine is well presented, fully explained and has many practical suggestions . Should be read before you yourself becomes in need of such loving and well planned care. The best takeaway: medical treatment is and should be vastly different for ages 50 and 80. Our bodies have most likely changed, therefore so should our medical care, more thoughtful consideration needs to be given and our families should be involved in decision making

This is a fabulous book for anyone with “late life” family members. The first few pages of the book REALLY impacted my overall thinking and attitude. Wow....The information and guidance the author offers hits very close to home (at least it did in my case)...”dang, I blew that situation”, and, “crap, this is hard”. But when you change your mindset and commit to the process, it’ll make all the difference. I’ve given away multiple copies because people start reading and then look up at me and say, “wow”. Then I get a follow up after they read the book....changed my thinking, how did you find this?, everyone needs to read this book...

About the Author

Stella M. Nkomo serves as professor in the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Pretoria. She is the former chair of the Department of Management at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. She holds a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Nkomo is a former Scholar-in-Residence at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College and Harvard University. Dr. Nkomo's nationally recognized work on race and gender in organizations, managing diversity, leading change, and human resource management appears in numerous journals, edited volumes, and magazines. She has served on the editorial board of several management journals, including the Academy of Management Review; Organization; British Journal of Management; the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal; Journal of Managerial Psychology; Management Communication Quarterly; Work and Occupations; and the Journal of Management Education. She has written three successful books and is a former member of the executive board of the Human Resource Management Division of the Academy of Management. Most recently, she served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. Dr. Nkomo has received numerous honors, including the Gender and Diversity in Organization Division Sage Scholarly Contributions Award in 2009. She received the Belk College of Business Research Excellence Award and the Bank of America Teaching Excellence Award during her tenure at the University of North Carolina. This book is "not terrible". The downsides of the book is first, the print quality (looks like photocopies, sometimes not even good ones), and second, that some of the information is inconsistent within the case studies. The book is in its 7th edition. In at least one of the case studies (so far I have finished less than 10 of them), the table of data used did not match the information presented in the text/explanation of the case study. Not too big of a problem except the wrong information appeared in the explanation of how to calculate some of the data. This is highly unfortunate because you don't want to teach people how to do calculations the wrong way. The good side of the book is that it can be used to facilitate good discussion. Some of the questions in the case studies are spot on. Its just a matter of not letting the "noise" of the downsides of the book to drown out the content.

This book is great, informative and exercises are real day-to-day problems faced by HR. Too bad the Instructors at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio are too incompetent to know how to utilize this text.

Easy rental and exactly what I needed for one of my college courses. Priced great compared to having to purchase brand new.

Very helpful text. One that Icould not complete my required course work with. It is a very helpful text that can be used as a reference guide.

I used this book for one of my Human Resource class and it gave me some good insight on how to prepare to handle some incidents. Also this book is good material for my library.

Had to get for school

I purchased this text book because it said I could download to my Kindle touch. When I downloaded it my touch said I could not use with this product. When I called for support I was told it could be done on Ipad, or Android Kindle. Fortunately I have a tablet that I could download the software onto to use my textbook but it would have been nice to know what systems the book would work on before I purchased it.

The first time I read this, as a school assignment, more than 50 years ago, I accepted it as little more than a nice story. Yes, this is a work of fiction but the fiction exists only in terms of the specific dates, names and places. Everything, which occurs, in this book, really happened, commonly, in our country’s 17th through 19th century histories. Unfortunately, most of our public grammar schools, even most of our public high schools, still teach history as little more than a series of unrelated, unconnected dates, places and names, to be committed to memory. No connections are made, to the circumstances, causes or conditions, which surrounded the people and places or generated the actions. It’s not until one gets into undergrad school that one has evan a small chance of understanding history, in the related-circumstances or bigger picture senses. This book is an excellent introduction, for youngsters, to understand how and why some things occurred, not just that they happened in an apparent vacuum. While our Native American tribes had absolutely no comprehension of the concepts of DNA, RNA or heredity, they knew, from the first-hand results of their continuous inbreeding, that they needed diversity, from outside their limited circle, to keep their groups functional and competitive, with the other tribes. Theft/adoption, of women of child-bearing ages and children, from other tribes or societal groups, was their way of exercising their sole ability to cope with those diversity needs. This novel explains these things, at a level compatible with tweens and early teens, without making it seem like they’re receiving a history lesson.

Conrad Richter spins a powerful tale in a short time. His writing style reminds me of Richard Connell ("The Most Dangerous Game") in that he can deliver so much with so few words.This is as much about the collision of vastly different cultures as it is about a boy caught between them. John Butler, the son of a prominent Pennsylvania frontier family was kidnapped as a child by Delaware Indians during a massacre; Indians who were seeing their homeland usurped by white settlers and were making a last stand against them.The Indians brought up the boy as an Indian, giving him the name True Son; his own acceptance of the new way of life began to grow and deepen within him, so that when he was brought back to his own family eleven years later, he had formed distinct opinions of his own against the whites; in his own mind, he was not White, but Indian. He loved and appreciated all things Indian; the forests, the rivers, the animals and birds of the woods; the religion of the Great Spirit. Richter's descriptive passages delve deep into the psyche of a youth torn by opposing forces between two worlds, while one single world is the one he has accepted as his. As his birth family struggles to reclaim him, it drives all of them against each other, in a fierce battle of wills that none of them will truly triumph over when all is said and done.Another excellent novel with a similar, more modern theme regarding a childhood friendship between two boys,one white,one red,until adulthood intervenes,is "Crazy Weather" by Charles McNichols.Another Conrad Richter tale I highly recommend is "Sea of Grass" which is also about the frontier, (New Mexico) but with an entirely different context. "Sea of Grass" and "The Light in the Forest" are both slim volumes, but with a lot in between the pages.

Conrad Richter paints a masterpiece with mere words. This is a most beautiful story. I want to read everything he has written. I'm starting with The Trees and am not disappointed. He creates characters and scenes that live and breathe.

Perhaps somewhat dated in terms of its handling... but much has happened which has changed the way we think since the 60s... This book was well suited for me as a budding adolescent, and it still touches me in my late 60s... I believe that I described the book as 'Provocative' when I was 12 years old.

This is a typical Conrad Richter book, with skillfully-rendered dialects and a plot that rings true, coming from the eastern United States a couple of centuries ago. Without spoiling it, Richter deals with the hardships of repatriated Indian captives. Personally, I liked his "Awakening Land" trilogy more, but this was an authentic read.

I liked this book because it resists the temptation to Idealize the American Indian. The main character was taken as a youth by indians from his family then forced to return years later. He does not get along well with his real family He does not admire or understand his father who as a pale sickly older man lives his life indoors working as an accountant. He does not like living indoors. The only one he bonds with is his much younger brother. He runs away from home back to his indian family but on a raid with them he is horrified when they kill the children of the settlers they attack. He is left between two worlds unable to adapt to civilized life and unable to live with the murderers he finds himself among.

Great book, bought it since it was one of my favorites when I was young. Arrived in excellent condition.

Beautifully written, A Light In the Forest is the tale of a young boy torn between worlds, fiercely prejudiced against each other. True Son, a fifteen year old white boy was taken in by a Native American tribe when he was only four years old, and sense then his hate for the white people has grown stronger and stronger. But now that he is forced to return to his original family, he learns that his " Delaware " people are just as flawed as any culture or civilization. This book is both a coming of age story as well as a tale that blurs the lines between right and wrong. A surprising page turner, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Sarah Dunbar is in one of the first groups of black students to integrate into the all white Jefferson High School in Virginia in 1959. From the first day of school and onward, she and her cohorts are harassed and threatened by the white students (and the teachers). They are subject to a number of humiliations and violence. Sarah, an honor student at her all black school, is put into remedial classes simply because she is black and the white administration has decided that black kids aren’t capable of keeping up with the white kids intellectually. Sarah endures the endless days of being spit on, having things thrown at her, being called names, being pushed and shoved, etc. She does all this and tries to protect her little sister, who is also in the integrating group, at the same time. She harbors some ill feelings towards her parents and the local leaders of the NAACP for encouraging herself and the others to go into this school, but does her best to hold her head high and persevere.Meanwhile, there is a white student at the school, Linda Hairston, who is the daughter of the main newspaper’s editor and most outspoken critic of de-segregation. Linda hates and fears her father but has been brought up hearing negative things about black people and believes in all the “reasons” the races should stay “separate but equal”. She sees the new black students as “instigators” and is irritated that they weren’t happy to simply stay at their own school. She writes editorials for the school newspaper that blame the black kids for the abuse they are enduring at the hands of the whites. In her mind, they are ungrateful and lesser people who have arrived out of their selfishness to ruin her senior year.When Sarah and Linda end up assigned to work on a project together, both are upset about it. Sarah knows Linda’s feelings about herself and the other black kids, and Linda not only feels she is above having to work with Sarah on the project, but also fears her father’s reaction if he finds out about it. So, they decide to meet secretly. As they are forced to interact more and more, Linda starts to question the things she has been brought up to believe about blacks. However, she has a habit of seeing Sarah as different from the others, continuing her dislike for the other black students. Linda waivers back and forth between liking Sarah and hating her. Some of the things that come out of Linda’s mouth are so offensive, it’s hard to believe Sarah would even continue to try to get through to her, but she does, and they end up forming a special friendship.I really liked Lies We Tell Ourselves for the most part. I think it’s a very important book, and one that everyone should read, just to experience what Sarah and the others went through in a first person narrative. It’s so much different than reading about this period of history in a textbook or even a non-fiction book. This feels so much more personal. I felt the fear, anger, and the humiliation along with Sarah. I even empathized somewhat with Linda, who was so much a product of her environment and her overbearing father. That doesn’t excuse the way she acted, but I was able to understand her character. The secondary characters were well-developed, and I was able to see things from their points of view as well, especially Ruthie’s.The problem I had with Lies We Tell Ourselves, which is going to keep me from giving it five stars, is the budding romance between Sarah and Linda. It’s not that it was an inter-racial lesbian relationship, I don’t have a problem with that, it’s more that it was a relationship between two people from such different mindsets, backgrounds, and histories. I never felt that Linda accepted the equality of blacks, especially so much so that she would consider getting involved romantically with Sarah. I also never understood Sarah’s interest in Linda, other than to educate her on her misconceptions of the different races. They just seemed too different to me. I never really felt any chemistry between them either, unless it was supposed to be in the almost constant arguments. I understand the link between racial and sexual prejudice, but I think it was just too much to take on in one book. I think it would have been much better had the relationship between Linda and Sarah been left as simply a friendship. I had decided a while ago that I was going to give this book a try. It honestly surprised me because it was a constant what's going to happen next because every time you turn around something new is happening. It was definitely a good decision, especially being from the LGBT community who is also engaged to a beautiful woman who happens to be African American. It just shows that civil rights has always been a real problem. Not just as an African American, but as being gay. It was easy to relate to because had I been born earlier, it could have just as easily been me or my fiancée.

This was very well-written and, thankfully, clean of typos. Also, for people not familiar with this point in history, certainly an eye-opening read. However, as a person who was already familiar with stories about the integration of schools, I found myself wanting a little less history and a little more personal interaction with our two protagonists and their families. And while I kept wondering how the author would hopefully pull off a happy ending in this time period and environment, she managed to find a way that was at least hopeful. Personally, I wanted to see a little bit more of that part of the story, and would certainly be willing to buy and read a sequel.

For me, the most compelling aspect of this book was its realness in plot, because at one point, the beginnings of integration in schools was real. The characters, the dialogue, and development of the story were authentic and heartwrenching, and I believe Talley has written a beautifully crafted work that highlights history, through the means of fiction, with which can be translated to the up and coming young adult generations. Although as adult it was difficult to repetitively read the N word used throughout a YA novel, Talley would not have been able to honestly represent the times without doing so. Overall, I was impressed with the wide span of the conflicts this novel covers, which certainly stretches far beyond race, and I would hope that the youth of today (and of the future) pick up this text.

I liked that both views were seen in this book. Showing how difficult it could be to stand up against a crowd is something timeless. Racism and bullying is something relevant today, even though many still insist on turning a blind eye. The fact that homosexuality was also something the characters had to come to terms with, just adds to how more of his some things unfortunately haven't come as far as we would like to believe. Great book for teens to read, and one they will easily get into.

Lies we tell ourselves is a book of rights. Not just those of black individuals but also a hint of rights for those in the LGBTQ community. This takes a hard look at what integration in a school in the south looked like for 8 kids just trying to get what they should be entitled to. I say it's so so because I feel the relationship that was in this book is a bit forced and took away from the rest of the story which made me not super interested in finishing this book. I am glad that I did though.

But this book made me question myself and the people around me, and broadened my horizons. Such a ride! I would really like to read everything this author used as a reference for Lies We Tell Ourselves. I didn't expect this book to be this intense, and yet make me feel hopeful. Discrimination based on skin color and sexual orientation still very much exists, but one sacrifice of a brave soul at a time, and everyone will be closer and closer to realizing we are all real, living, breathing, FEELING human beings. We all deserve to be our true self, no matter what miseducated lies other people, or we ourselves, tell us.

This was a very hard book to read and I really expected less about race and civil rights and more about lgbt issues but I guess when it comes down to it its pretty much the same issue,inequality! Difficult to read with everything going on today but a good book that makes you think if you're open to other opinions!
