Review

"This lovely, sensitive account of how young children with seemingly intractable behavioral problems can find peace and a place in the world is a treasure for parents and clinicians alike. Dr Lovett uses case vignettes not only to describe what she does but also to explain her thought processes and the science behind her interventions. Clinicians interested in her approach will find the latter part of the book especially helpful, with detailed instructions on how they can incorporate into their own practice the techniques Dr. Lovett uses so adroitly. Parents will treasure her message of hope and find many valuable gems they can enhance their daily efforts to express their love and caring for even the most difficult children." -- Glen R. Elliott, PhD, MD, Chief Psychiatrist, Children's Health Council; Clinical Professor (Affiliated) in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford School of Medicine "This is a fascinating book on the integration of play therapy, narratives and EMDR to heal children who have suffered complex traumatization very early in their development. It focuses on rebuilding trust, resolving trauma, and repairing attachment. Lovett works from an empathic and sensitive understanding of the child’s world and the child perspective. Rich in wonderful clinical case material, this gifted therapist gives detailed insights into her thinking and offers a variety of very helpful creative clinical tools and strategies and how to use these to guide parents and children. It is a must-read for all clinicians working in this complex field." -- Joanne Morris-Smith C.Psychol, AFBPsS, EMDR Europe Accredited Child & Adolescent Trainer; Co-author of EMDR for the Next Generation: Healing Children & Families "Joan Lovett's The Family-Attachment Tangle is an invaluable for book for anyone working with young children and their parents. Her portrayal of children struggling with the burden of traumatic experiences illuminates how early disruptions to a child's sense of safety can make daily life almost unbearably difficult for the child and his parents. The book emphasizes strategies for treatment of PTSD including EMDR, but Dr. Lovett's approach can be adapted for any child who has had an interruption to developing a sense of safety and security during the early months and years of life." – Meg Zweiback, RN,CPNP,MPH, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Family Consultant "Readers of The Trauma-Attachment Tangle have a unique opportunity to virtually join Dr. Joan Lovett in her office--to follow her thought processes and witness her artistry as she unravels and intervenes with the perplexing problems of complicated child cases. The book includes creative games and strategies for enhancing parent-child relationships and guidelines for writing narratives that provide healing and hope. It’s an inspirational read for both clinicians and parents who have struggled with the challenges presented by severely traumatized children." --Debra Wesselmann, MS, LIMHP, Co-founder of The Attachment and Trauma Center of Nebraska; Co-author of Integrative Team Treatment for Attachment Trauma in Children: Family Therapy and EMDR "Dr. Joan Lovett's latest book is an engrossing and extremely useful book for both developmental pediatricians, therapists, and general pediatricians who are at the front gate. As a general pediatrician who treats patients with complex medical problems, adopted families, and children with other attachment-attunement issues, this book provides detailed accounts of childrens' behaviors, parents' responses, and Dr. Lovett's approach to improving their physical and psychological well-being. She also presents solid evidence-based information on EMDR to support her treatment of these extremely difficult to treat children. Trauma-Attachment Tangle will help us to be better clinicians for our patients who have suffered trauma and attachment issues." --Elizabeth Salsburg, MD, FAAP Kiwi Pediatrics Medical Group, Chairperson of Department of Pediatrics Alta Bates Summit Medical Center "Dr. Joan Lovett has written a remarkable book that will appeal to parents, teachers, mental health clinicians, day care workers, doctors, nurses, and anyone else who interact with children. Readers will be guided to understand children’s behaviors and how to resolve inappropriate behavior though heartwarming and comprehensive case stories that describe an array of challenges, including attachment issues, early medical traumas and hospitalization, vicarious traumatization, loss of a parent, extreme neglect, and developmental delays. With sensitivity and skillful artistry, Dr Lovett models how to help children feel safe and form positive and loving relationships through the use of EMDR therapy, engaging games, healing narratives, and other practical, easily implemented tools." --Robbie Dunton, MS, MA, EMDR Institute Coordinator "The book Trauma-Attachment Tangle [...] can be of great comfort and help to these parents and also to clincians and play therapists who are attempting to ease the lives of very young children with extreme symptoms due to complex early ruptures in attachment and terrified/aggressive responses to early losses and traumas. [...] This book offers a ray of hope for loving adoptive or biological parents struggling with mystifying and severely worriesome behaviors and interactions when a child has suffered early trauma." --Alice Sterilng Honig, PsycCRITIQUES "The Trauma-Atachment Tangle [...] is a delightful and enlightening read. Do not expect the dry re-counting of symptoms, case histories, and treatment methods that are sometimes foudn in clincial books. Lovett's sparkling narrative style quickly draws the reader into the mystery surrounding each puzzling case study. It is a joy to follow Dr. Lovett's thought processes as she unravels the tangle and traces each child's current behaviors to earlier frightening events. [...] [The] jargon-free style of writing is refreshing and makes the book accessible to a broad range of readers. [...] I appreciated the congruence of dr. Lovett's approach with the adaptive information processing model and the EMDR standard protocols. Her adaptatitions are pure common sense and the rational is clear. In summary, Trauma-Attachment Tangle [...] illustrates masterful clinical work and brings insight and skill to a braod audience of parents and professionals working with our most vulnerable population of children." -Debra Wesselmann, Journal of EMDR Practice and Research , 2015

This book has been an excellent addition to my EMDR library. I work with children and trauma exclusively therefore attachment is frequently impacted. I have been able to use suggestions from this book already and would recommend it to others.

Very informative book.

Great, full of good information.

Very helpful text in developing stronger skills in dealing with EMDR in children and families. Excellent Resource.

Excellent book with outstanding service.

This book is an excellent resource for working with traumatized children.

I didn't get what I was looking for. this book is like a case book, doesn't provide detail explanation or show the application of EMDR protocol step by step. If you wanna learn how to conduct EMDR, don't buy this book!

Simply stated, this is the best iPhone manual available. The introductory chapters are a reasonable read, especially for anyone new to the iPhone. The remaining chapters are pure chloroform, IF you try to read them as a novel. Just use it when in need by finding the right chapter in the excellent index.

Lovely to look at, hard to see . . . This is my third Missing Manual, and at first I was delighted to see the more compact size, slick pages, and color illustrations. Then I tried to read it, and within seconds I knew I was in trouble: the text is printed in GRAY, not black. For anyone with visual limitations, this can be a deal-breaker. How ironic that a book which devotes an entire chapter to accessibility violates basic rules of legibility by taking away much-needed contrast between the text and the white paper behind it. Missing Manuals, what were you thinking???Luckily, I discovered that I could read it, but only under a very strong, bright light.I am completely new to iPhones--or any other smartphone--and have been working with this and two other books to get up to speed. The others are iPhone for Seniors for Dummies, which is helpful for introducing the basics; and iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X from the Teaching yourself Visually series (especially useful with everything being clearly labeled on sample screens. I'm getting useful information from all of these books. But iPhone: the Missing Manual is by far the most thorough. For example, it w "first as the only one of the three that talked about the "burst" feature of the camera--something I didn't realize I had triggered. So it's wa worthwhile purchase, but David Pogue, PLEASE use black text in the future. (Note: the Kindle version does have black text--and a serif typeface as well--but I find that format too difficult to use with a reference book.

This book is a necessity if you own an iPhone. The author and I even suggest buying earlier versions if your iPhone does not support IOS 11. Can you believe your iPhone is packed with 633 pages worth of software. Buy the book, you will never remember everything! I checked the iPhone for dummies books out of the library and they were worthless to someone new to the iPhone. A bonus is that some of the tips are also relevant for the iPod.

It is more than a book about the latest iPhone. It is also about the latest version of iOS, useful for iPad owners. Like all books by David Pogue, the writing is excellent.

I don't even need the CD! When one packs thousands of features into a handheld device it is very easy to overlook important items. This book is structured so I can go to a section and find what I need without a painful search. It has nothing to do with the book; but I would really like apps and widgets to have a basic help function!

The usual excellent run through of what the iPhone is capable of. Far superior to the User Guide put out by Apple. Do one for the latest iPads now.

This is an excellent manual of user information. Im sure dave had quality helpers grooming it. My 90 year old mother doesnt do online manuals well so she greatly appreciates this reference. Thanks Dave.

The new edition has proved just as valuable as the editions before it. Excellent resource.

I am amazed by Cornwell's writing. I am amazed by Cornwell's storytelling. I am amazed with the characters Cornwell has developed in this series. I saw the TV series several years ago before I read the books and I thought it was unlikely I'd ever read the books because the TV series was quite good. I'm an avid fiction reader and love a well written series but was out of anything I liked. On that basis I decided to read the first book in the series and was surprised to find that over the years the book series had been added to extensively since the TV series. I've read the entire series up to Sharpe's sword but this is my first review. Every book has been exceptional and Sharpe's Sword has meticulously accurate historical content woven into the breadth of this fictional character's story. Cornwell has a talent for taking the reader back to the time and place minus modern sensibilities but it is all done in a respectful way. I obviously didn't live in those times but I'm an avid historical fiction and history reader and Cornwell nails down the time and place vividly without beating the reader over the head with it. I highly recommend Sharpe's Sword and would suggest to you that this is hours of very inexpensive entertainment. I recommend you start with the first chronological book of the story, look it up online so you start where Sharpe's story begins, and not with the first book Cornwell wrote. Buy it!

This is one in a series of novels by Bernard Cornwell, all of which are awesome! I first learned of this author from an article featuring Stuart Varney amongst other famous people in Newsmax. The people were all asked what they were reading at the time and Stuart mentioned Sharpe's Tiger. This book is in the series and I couldn't put it down. Stuart Varney mentioned Sharpe's tiger, which was the first book. I think it best that if you are to read this series, you should do so in chronological order to get the most out of them. If you don't they will each stand alone, but you will miss some of the things about Richard Sharpe. All of these books are centered about the Campaigns of the British army in India, Denmark, England, the Trafalger straights, Spain, Portugal, & France in the early 1800's. The stories, though fictional, are centered about real campaigns and battles fought. Cornwell has a summary of the real history at the end of each book which tell the real story. I must say I am addicted to all of them! Here is a chronological reading order for the series:Sharpe’s TigerSharpe’s TriumphSharpe’s FortressSharpe’s TrafalgarSharpe’s PreySharpe’s RiflesSharpe’s HavocSharpe’s EagleSharpe’s GoldSharpe’s EscapeSharpe’s FurySharpe’s BattleSharpe’s CompanySharpe’s SwordSharpe’s EnemySharpe’s HonorSharpe’s RegimentSharpe’s SiegeSharpe’s RevengeSharpe’s DevilWaterloo (Sharpe)The whole series is available on Kindle. I do wish they would make the whole series available on one download in chronological order.Enjoy!!

There are only a handful of novelists who can describe a battle and keep it from sound like a mish-mash. The center of this book is the Battle of Salamanca. For those who have come over from the TV series this will be a revelation. The BBC TV series did not have much of a budget. That wasn't a limitation for the first few stories when Sharpe had been just promoted from a sergeant to an ensign. He had basically a squad under his command. But in the novel's he keeps getting promoted. In the previous book it was 'Sharpe's Company'. That means he was a captain who commanded a company. Here he is still a captain. This means that he still has rifles under his command but in the British Army at this time riflemen were skirmishers. That is to say they were irregular troops who went out before the main troops to scout and disrupt the enemy formations. There would only be a few skirmishers. Most of a Captain's troops would not have a rifle and would not be wear a green uniform. Most would be regular red coats who would stand in rank and file as part of a larger formation. This only gets worse when Sharpe advances up the ranks. I think he becomes a major in the next novel. The TV series can't show a full scale Napoleonic battlefield. They probably only have twenty cast members in total. But in the novels there is no such limitation. As I said before Cornwell is adept at describing a battlefield with thousands of actors moving at once. It would be nice if someone might make a full length feature film of these novels. They really do cry out for a cast of thousands.

Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series is great entertainment: well written, exciting, memorable characters. If you like war, adventure, history you’ll like Richard Sharpe, rifleman.

This particular edition of the novel is terrible. This goes for all the novels in this printing. The print is about 9 pts., if that. The other edition is out of print. If the novels you want are in this edition, forget it. Buy the ebooks instead. I love all the Sharpe novels, but beware this particular publishing house: unless you can read print finer than fine print ....

My husband, who is a history major and buff, is reading this series and absolutely loves it. He says it is incredibly engaging and historically accurate. If you like Patrick O'Brian's 'Master and Commander' series, you should give Sharpe a try!

If you want to read a case study involving psychology and science, this is not the book for you. If you want a hard-hitting documentary, this is also not the book for you. This is a book from a foster MOTHER (not a doctor), involving her family's attempt to help children who are broken, those children that so many others have given up on helping. There were instances I thought she was being too gentle, as did her family, but obviously the "normal" ways of discipline have not worked. A completely different approach is called for, to try to sway these children from a final disintegration and life in an institution. Some, sadly, can't be helped (I grew up knowing one such child). What I see this book doing, besides entertaining the reader, is opening the general reader up to what life is like for these abused, traumatized children and what life can be like for the families trying to help them find a place in this world. These are stories about real children and real families and a system that is struggling to help as many as possible. I didn't agree with everything she did, but I also wasn't living in that situation. Many ideas were ones I discovered during my years of providing child day care or working with people who had Alzheimer's, dementia or mental illness. I found the pace of the story steady, not too rapid or boringly slow. The author does like to use "college" words when a simple one would be just as effective. Some of the British colloquialisms were not familiar to me, but I managed to find most in the dictionary if I couldn't figure it out from the conversation. I recall very few, if any, typos or awkward structuring. I found this to be a great read and would recommend it to my friends and family.

Casey Watson and her husband Mike (psuedonyms) take in, for one year, a profoundly damaged boy and work miracles in his life. This is a gripping story, at times very difficult and painful to read. Throughout the book I was appalled by how dreadfully "the system" had failed this child and his biological siblings. When a mother sells her five-year-old into prostitution in order to procure drugs, ALL of her children need to be removed to a safe place by social services, not just one of them! The sluggish responses and lack of advocacy for these children, documented in painstaking detail throughout the book, are truly horrifying. Clearly the birthmother's home was not a safe environment for any child; why the lack of appropriate action on the part of responsible adults? Why the lengthy unsupervised visits with a violent, drug-addicted parent? It made me so angry to read of this child's unnecessary suffering.Once involved, the Watson family provides the basics: shelter, routine, stability, affection, fun, commitment, caring. And what an amazing person Justin turns out to be, as he begins to heal, and then to thrive, in the safe environment they create for him.It surprised me very much to learn that a child as troubled as Justin was initially, with a history of violently attacking people, was not at any time under the care of a psychiatrist. The foster mother/author was left to deal with terrifying situations alone and unaided, such as (SPOILER ALERT!!!) being threatened with a knife on one occasion, and a staplegun on another. At no point were the police or mental health professionals on the scene, and I found that odd. It also struck me as odd that the Watsons were willing to risk introducing a dog into their family, given Justin's history of animal cruelty. The family's strength and resilience were amazing. And Ms. Watson tells her story with no smugness; the tone is humble, not at all self-congratulatory. I was filled with admiration for how they bounced back from crises, their honesty and optimism in the face of very discouraging realities, to say the least. The book is both disturbing and inspiring. It agitated me greatly to read it, but at the same time, I am very grateful people like Casey and Mike Watson exist. Without such people, without their love and courage, the world would be a much sadder place.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***I have so much to say about this book, I don’t even know where to start. Mostly it’s about my opinion about Justin’s whole situation and how I feel about the welfare system, more than it is about the book.Firstly, I have to say I hugely admire the patience which Casey and Mike had in dealing with Justin and his outbursts and general terrible behaviour. Though, I don’t think Casey is as noble as she makes out to be. The start of the book (after the first chapter), as well as throughout, it annoyed me how often Casey makes Justin’s story about herself, her feelings, how well (or not) she deals with his behaviour, how wonderful her husband and kids are, what a hyperactive person she is,etc, etc, and how often she pats herself on the back for a job she feels she did well. To me, it took a lot of the focus off Justin when I had to sit through pages of Casey either beating herself up about how she dealt with a situation (but then more pages on EVERYONE else telling her how well she dealt with it), or her feeling terrific about calming Justin down, encouraging him, and so on (which I applaud, but don’t feel like having her analyse herself for pages on end). You see, I’ve read quite a few of Cathy Glass’s books, and she has such a humble way of telling her stories about children she fostered, without placing too much focus on herself or her family. She includes her feelings and her kids in her stories, but doesn’t constantly tell the reader how perfect her family is, or talk too much about herself and her perfect home. She shares her hands-on techniques and thus I always feel I can learn something from her. I also feel welcome in her home through her books, as I already know her routines and what to expect from the way she runs her household. So yes, I’ve seen this in another of Casey Watson’s books that I’ve read, and it also bothered me then, how she makes the story about herself and her perfect children. Also, all the grammar errors in this book were very annoying.Justin is a very disturbed child and I felt sorry for him. I detested what his mother did to him and his siblings. As a mother of two, it broke my heart over and over again each time his mother let him down or hurled abuse at him. Honestly though, for all my griping earlier in my review, I must admit that I admire people like the Watsons who open their home to such a badly damaged child, and who see it through all the way to his next placement. I would never be able to put up with the behaviour of such a child, his background notwithstanding.I felt that the welfare system let Justin down badly (no surprises there). Justin needed more than the Watson’s help. He needed a psychologist, counselling and therapy, and I was quite surprised that no-one suggested it. Anger management classes aren’t enough for a child such as Justin. Even at the end of the book Casey admits that at seventeen Justin is still not a well-adjusted child; now living in a children’s home, working as a gardener. I just can’t imagine there is much of a future for him. How will he be treating his own wife and children? Is he still abusing animals like he did with Kieron’s dog? Is he still taking pleasure in holding little children’s heads under water? This kid needed serious help; much more than a points system used by the Watsons could offer him. I viewed it as a temporary Band-Aid to improve his behaviour while he’s living with them, but how did it help him after he left their home?Clearly, it made very little difference once moved on.I think as much as Casey sugar-coated the ending, the fact that Justin’s last placement didn’t work after two years tells me that he needed more than what the Watsons could offer him, but that he was failed by, firstly, his mother, and then by a welfare system that didn’t afford him the psychological help he needed. I also didn’t buy that when they were on vacation, and Justin ran into a palm tree, his behaviour changed for the better, for the rest of their vacation (after a horrendous start). Was slamming into a palm tree really all it took to set him straight? I can’t help thinking what that suggests. It was a good read seeing how the Watsons opened their home and their hearts to him. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down until I had finished, and read into the morning hours. The ending just left me feeling sad; though Casey and her family did all they could for Justin. What a miserable state our world is in, knowing that this sort of bad “parenting” (such as what we see with Justin’s mother and many others like her) will continue through generations onwards.

Overall great book to give most aspiring and seasoned gentleman. With that being said, it is a great place to start, however, I find that some of these responses are fair and by no means great. In my opinion, there are much better ways for a gentleman to deal with these situations. For example, there is a page that brings up a situation where you have a date at an elegant restaurant and she proceeds to continually sample from your plate. The line basically directly tells her what you’re going to do, whereas you should just do it and explain it only after it’s been done to avoid the inevitable offense many ladies would incur from the abrupt response. As I stated, this is still an excellent place to start and a great reminder for others. Still earns 5 stars from me which says a lot, do yourself a favor and give this book a read.

John Bridges' "Gentleman" guides to behavior and etiquette are very useful to those of us who were not steeped in this culture as part of our upbringing yet have a need to understand and interact with it.

Nice. More people shoudl read it and apply.

Bought it used and it looked brand new! Along with that, it's a well written and helpful book.

Very good book. Educational practical and professional. Great book to add to the family library. Also shows people that being a being a gentleman is something your family or you care about.

Excellent, well done.

Great advice.

Fantastic read. I was able to learn a lot and have a chuckle here and there. Couldn't recommend it more.

He brilliantly anatomizes the corn-based diet that has emerged in the postwar era.”—The New York Times“[Pollan] wants us at least to know what it is we are eating, where it came from and how it got to our table. It’s an admirable goal, well met in The Omnivore’s Dilemma.”—The Wall Street Journal“A gripping delight…This is a brilliant, revolutionary book with huge implications for our future and a must-read for everyone. And I do mean everyone.”—The Austin Chronicle“As lyrical as What to Eat is hard-hitting, Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals…may be the best single book I read this year. This magisterial work, whose subject is nothing less than our own omnivorous (i.e., eating everything) humanity, is organized around two plants and one ecosystem. Pollan has a love-hate relationship with ‘Corn,’ the wildly successful plant that has found its way into meat (as feed), corn syrup and virtually every other type of processed food. American agribusiness’ monoculture of corn has shoved aside the old pastoral ideal of ‘Grass,’ and the self-sustaining, diversified farm based on the grass-eating livestock. In ‘The Forest,’ Pollan ponders the earliest forms of obtaining food: hunting and gathering. If you eat, you should read this book.”—Newsday“Smart, insightful, funny and often profound.”—USA Today“The Omnivore’s Dilemma is an ambitious and thoroughly enjoyable, if sometimes unsettling, attempt to peer over these walls, to bring us closer to a true understanding of what we eat—and, by extension, what we should eat…. It is interested not only in how the consumed affects the consumer, but in how we consumers affect what we consume as well…. Entertaining and memorable. Readers of this intelligent and admirable book will almost certainly find their capacity to delight in food augmented rather than diminished.”—San Francisco Chronicle“On the long trip from the soil to our mouths, a trip of 1,500 miles on average, the food we eat often passes through places most of us will never see. Michael Pollan has spent much of the last five years visiting these places on our behalf.”—Salon.com“The author of Second Nature and The Botany of Desire, Pollan is willing to go to some lengths to reconnect with what he eats, even if that means putting in a hard week on an organic farm and slitting the throats of chickens. He’s not Paris Hilton on The Simple Life.”—Time“A pleasure to read.”—The Baltimore Sun“A fascinating journey up and down the food chain, one that might change the way you read the label on a frozen dinner, dig into a steak or decide whether to buy organic eggs. You’ll certainly never look at a Chicken McNugget the same way again…. Pollan isn’t preachy; he’s too thoughtful a writer and too dogged a researcher to let ideology take over. He’s also funny and adventurous.”—Publishers Weekly“[Pollan] does everything from buying his own cow to helping with the open-air slaughter of pasture-raised chickens to hunting morels in Northern California. This is not a man who’s afraid of getting his hands dirty in the quest for better understanding. Along with wonderfully descriptive writing and truly engaging stories and characters, there is a full helping of serious information on the way modern food is produced.”—BookPage“The Omnivore’s Dilemma is about something that affects everyone.”—The Sacramento Bee“Lively and thought-provoking.”—East Bay Express“Michael Pollan makes tracking your dinner back through the food chain that produced it a rare adventure.”—O, The Oprah Magazine“A master wordsmith…Pollan brings to the table lucid and rich prose, an enthusiasm for his topic, interesting anecdotes, a journalist’s passion for research, an ability to poke fun at himself, and an appreciation for historical context…. This is journalism at its best.”—Christianity Today“First-rate…[A] passionate journey of the heart…Pollan is…an uncommonly graceful explainer of natural science; this is the book he was born to write.”—Newsweek“[Pollan’s] stirring new book…is a feast, illuminating the ethical, social and environmental impacts of how and what we choose to eat.”—The Courier-Journal“From fast food to ‘big’ organic to locally sourced to foraging for dinner with rifle in hand, Pollan captures the perils and the promise of how we eat today.”—The Arizona Daily Star“A multivalent, highly introspective examination of the human diet, from capitalism to consumption.”—The Hudson Review“What should you eat? Michael Pollan addresses that fundamental question with great wit and intelligence, looking at the social, ethical, and environmental impact of four different meals. Eating well, he finds, can be a pleasurable way to change the world.”—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation and Reefer Madness“Widely and rightly praised…The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals [is] a book that—I kid you not—may change your life.”—Austin American-Statesman“With the skill of a professional detective, Michael Pollan explores the worlds of industrial farming, organic and sustainable agriculture, and even hunting and gathering to determine the links of food chains: how food gets from its sources in nature to our plates. The findings he reports in this this book are often unexpected, disturbing, even horrifying, but they are facts every eater should know. This is an engaging book, full of information that is most relevant to conscious living.”—Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Spontaneous Healing and Healthy Aging“Michael Pollan is a voice of reason, a journalist/philosopher who forages in the overgrowth of our schizophrenic food culture. He’s the kind of teacher we probably all wish we had: one who triggers the little explosions of insight that change the way we eat and the way we live.”—Alice Waters, owner of Chez Panisse restaurant“Michael Pollan is such a thoroughly delightful writer—his luscious sentences deliver so much pleasure and humor and surprise as they carry one from dinner table to cornfield to feedlot to forest floor, and then back again—that the happy reader could almost miss the profound truth half hidden at the heart of this beautiful book: that the reality of our politics is to be found not in what Americans do in the voting booth every four years but in what we do in the supermarket every day. Embodied in this irresistible, picaresque journey through America’s food world is a profound treatise on the hidden politics of our everyday life.”—Mark Danner, author of Torture and Truth: America, Abu Ghraib and the War on Terror“Every time you go into a grocery store you are voting with your dollars, and what goes into your cart has real repercussions on the future of the earth. But although we have choices, few of us are aware of exactly what they are. Michael Pollan’s beautifully written book could change that. He tears down the walls that separate us from what we eat, and forces us to be more responsible eaters. Reading this book is a wonderful, life-changing experience.”—Ruth Reichl, editor in chief of Gourmet magazine and author of Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise

It's a phrase that gets used too way often but this is the kind of book that can change your life. In the last year I have lost almost 50 pounds (BEFORE I started reading this book) and discovered just how profound an impact diet can make on your body. Not diet as in restricting carbs or loading up on proteins but diet as in being in tune with what you are eating. The Omnivores Dilemma isn't about losing weight, it's about having an awareness and appreciation for what's going into your body and an appreciation for the wondrous biological process that nature goes through to produce edible substances. One central question the author addresses is whether or not we as individuals actually save money by buying cheap food and what is the economic, environmental and health impact of having an increasingly monocultural diet of corn. Why is food that's bad for us so cheap? Because it's subsidized by the government. The author points out that the expanding waistlines of American's really took off when cola's switched from natural sugar to high fructose corn syrup. In fact corn syrup is nearly impossible to avoid. But it's not just what we buy at supermarkets. Mr. Pollan shows how the average meal at McDonald's is 50% or more corn after the corn is processed beyond recognition. One chapter that really stuck with me was the authors take on the idea that meat is murder. He carefully and respectfully refutes each of the points made by vegetarians on why eating meat is unethical. In the end I have personally settled on the same compromise as the author which is that eating meat is fine. The problem is when we pay no attention to the quality of life of the animals we consume. Unfortunately, there tends to be a near total disassociation in the minds of urban consumers between the meat and the animal. I am willing to pay a premium to get beef from cows that are grass fed and free of antibiotics and hormones. An ethical meat eater owes it to the animals he consumes to do at least a minimal amount of research on how they are treated. Personally I haven't eaten fast food since February 2007. I pay several dollars more per pound to buy beef at Whole Foods and I still probably have room for improvement. The next step would be to give our local farmers market a try.The changes I've made in my life include avoiding fast food look the plague, staying away from high fructose corn syrup specifically and generally paying attention to the label when I buy products. If a product has ingredients I can't identify like Xanthan Gum or Maltodextrin I put it back on the shelf. I also try and avoid products that use pesticides, antibiotics or hormones. It has made an enormous impact on my health.Omnivores Dilemma is a powerful book but it never feels preachy and although the author moves around to quite a few different topics never feels unfocused. This is one of those books that makes me wish I hadn't given out so many five stars because this one deserve six. There is a reason Michael Pollan currently has two books in the top 20 on Amazon. Do something for the world. Buy local. Buy organic and read the Omnivores Dilemma.

I'm 13 and as a requirement for my AP Human Geography Class I read this book. I enjoyed the language and style of writing even though it was complicated and slightly hard to understand in some spots. The rich descriptions of landscapes and emotions, took me through a range of feelings and made me confront "the omnivores dilemma" head on. This book is very informative and has helped me understand more about the food system. It has also given me hope that I will be able to see Joel Salatin's dream in my lifetime. I don't feel like there was a clear answer on what an individual could do to help the cause, but I'm sure it's not hard to find on the internet with food being such a popular subject nowadays. I would recommend this book to anybody, not only interested in food but human nature, the relationships between plants, animals, and fungi, government, and an opportunity for a richer, more natural life.

To be or not to be a vegetarian? This is a very interesting book - well thought out and investigated. I am not certain that I want to consume meat again as Pollan tells the reader how these feeder lot cows, pigs and chickens actually live and die. Really, not my idea of humane. Just as interesting is his investigation of corn. It is amazing how corn is in absolutely everything from high-fructose corn syrup to fish food; gasoline to paint; fish to .... well, you get the idea. While more and more acreage is devoted to mono-crops, chiefly corn, we are the "benefactors" of everything that is corn related. Feed lot cattle are fed corn to fatten them up even though it makes them terribly sick and reduces the number of valuable nutrients available to grass fed cows. Multiply that by lamb, chicken, goat, salmon, tilapia, shrimp and you get an idea of why you are eating corn at every meal whether you know it or not. Compound this with the fact that 3 companies control the corn product from seed to pesticide to fertilizer and this monoculture is there to get you in one way or another. Corn that can be sprayed with pesticides that kill everything except the corn - bugs, weeds..... Makes you wonder what you are eating. Anyhow, Pollan has done a wonderful job investigating the food chain and its effect on the environment be it our internal flora or life on earth.

Omnivore's Dilemma was assigned to me in an upper-level economics course, along with other similar books. From the very lengthy list of books, this and Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy were my absolute favorites. To be upfront, this book it is moderate to leftist in its opinions, as is Michael Klare's book, but both books opened my eyes to an entirely new way of thinking about my Economics & Policy degree. Years later, I'm still referencing them in papers & lectures I give. I highly recommend them to people in all disciplines, including casual readers who are just beginning to inform themselves about these topics. Michael Pollan wrote this book in a casual manner, as if sitting around a table with the reader and having a conversation about this great journey he took, yet at the end of the conversation the reader is left with a great amount of knowledge that they can use in countless ways. A great, fun read that I can't imagine anyone not liking. I can't recommend this book more! Happy Readings!!!
