Dr. Fawcett nails it! I've always been "good" with money, but Dr. Fawcett teaches the average doctor/ healthcare practitioner how to be great in terms they can routinely understand. He helps both those on the fence about whether or not they can make the changes to become debt free as well as those who have committed but may be missing a few key factors. With hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, a late start into the working world, and an expectation to keep up appearances, doctors need this information said in a certain way. Great read! Much of it is information that I already knew, but needed the reminder. There are a lot of useful gems in this book! I read it in my fourth year of medical school and plan to apply what I learned as I have just started residency.

I'm a dentist and an avid reader. I bought this book after seeing it mentioned on a blog (maybe white coat investor?). I read a lot of financial books and listen to a lot of dave Ramsey. Currently we are in the process of paying down massive debt. This book just reiterated all the concepts of building wealth and gave some good examples to keep the momentum going. I think it's a really good read for docs early in their careers to avoid some mistakes we made. However... there's something in it for everyone regardless of where you are on your journey.

I read this book in one sitting, but gained enough knowledge to feel I had been reading for days! A definite MUST read for any physician trying to turn the tide in his/her financial situation!

This is an excellent book for those beginning or furthering their practice of Medieval Longsword. I've been practicing HEMA Longsword for a year as of the writing of this review, I refer back to this book frequently for insight on techniques and for drills and material for new students. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is beginning or wants to further their practice of longsword. Guy Windsor is a great writer and presents the material in the order that someone just starting can follow and be successful. It covers conditioning and stretching, the basics of footwork, strikes and parries, then goes into more situations and techniques that build off of the basics. Guy is intimately familiar with the writings of Fiore Dei Liberi and his interpretation of Fiore's work is the most complete and accurate that I've encountered. I recommended this book for anyone that is learning on their own, anyone who already belongs to a club, instructors and new students alike. Great material from a great source!

In the second volume of "Mastering the Art of Arms", Guy Windsor provides an excellent introductory on the medieval longsword for the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) enthusiast. This book focuses on basic longsword tactics and techniques of the fencing master Fiore dei Liberi from "Il Fior di Battaglia" (the Flower of Battle), an early 14th century Italian fencing treatise.Windsor has an objective writing style that is also fun to read and his explanations are easy to follow. Unfortunately, the original 15th-century artwork of fencing plays was not reproduced; however, Windsor illustrates fencing plays with step-by-step photographs captioned by detailed descriptions. He provides sound interpretations of Fiore's fencing plays and includes a solid set of exercises and drills rooted in the Italian master's style. It would have been nice if Windsor waited and combined the Fiore dagger plays with this volume, providing a much more comprehensive edition centering around the Italian tradition. Regardless, this book is a great introductory guide for any HEMA enthusiast seeking to understand Italian longsword basics!

Excellent material from a true practitioner and scholar. Great manual for beginners and old handsalike. Would have given five stars if it wasn't black and white. This and the size of the images made some of the sequences difficult to follow. I would also like to know how much different this is from his two editions of Swordsmans Companion.

Guy has a methodical approach to Fiore's system that is unique in it's approach to fundamentals. Structure, positioning, and footwork are discussed in great deal as they are the foundation of the arts. What's better is there is no physical skill mentioned in the book that Guy does not give some sort of exercise for, which means that as a training manual there is no equal to the Mastering the Art of Arms series. There is a growing number of secondary interpretations of Fiore's work out there but none stand out so much as Guy's in clarity, accessibility, and simplicity. As someone without access to a great deal of HEMA training in my area I can say that before I discovered the Mastering the Art of Arms series and Guy's work generally I was floundering a bit, but Guy has given me and my study group a curriculum with all the nuts and bolts exposed and highlighted, and for that I am infinitely grateful.

This is my first reading and I was very pleased. However, I am also unclear on a number of points, particularly in the section that discusses the bind. The wiki videos were helpful, but in some cases a closer look at the action in the video is needed to see what actions are being applied. This is still a very helpful book. Hopefully my second reading will clarify my confusion.I. highly recommend this book.

This is what broke me into the world of HEMA, and is an all around great book. You will not become a swordmaster after reading (any book), but Guy does a wonderful job easing your into the mindset necessary to understand how actual sword fighting works.A note for us U.S. folks: Guy and his school are based in Europe, so some of his gear recommendations are not as easily recommended to someone on this side of the world.

Rarely do I write reviews, but this book deserves all the stars I can give it. I collect cookbooks, and whenever Phaidon releases a new one, I automatically purchase it. Although the books are always beautifully presented, the quality of the recipes can vary, and some of the books have practically no recipe notes at all (squinting at you, VEGAN).Fortunately for me, this cookbook checks all of my boxes. The presentation is gorgeous, with full-color photographs accompany every two or three recipes. Furthermore, there is a LOT of information about ingredients, preparation methods, meal presentation and cooking/serving equipment. You can really learn a lot just by paging through this volume, which is one of the most important qualities I look for in a cookbook.I would also note that this book is bound in such a way that it stays open on a cookbook stand, which is a huge help. It's a sizable tome, but not so thick that it won't fit in my stand. That may not be important to some, but it's nice to be able to use a cookbook without scraping up the bottoms of the pages as you wrestle the thing into your cookbook holder.So, final verdict: BUY IT. ::)

This book is great. Anyone looking for a gateway into Japanese cuisine should buy this immediately. Im a culinary student, and due to my mentors advice of "self study the cuisine you are interested in" I decided to specialize in Japanese cuisine. First of all this book is absolute beautiful. Stunningly so. Like honestly whoever designed this book needs a raise or a bonus or something. I honestly could go on about how wonderful this book is but I wont at risk of sounding like a paid reviewer. But seriously, just get it. I never write reviews but I would be doing the author of this book and any potential buyers a disservice if i didn't.I almost forgot one of my favorite parts of this book! I couldn't read this at Barnes and Noble because it was wrapped in plastic. It comes that way. I read reviews. I purchased cheaper than Barnes and knew I could return. I dunno about the translation or transfer of Japanese. I do know that it does discuss the very minimal basics of Japanese cooking such as dashi. It is a history lesson in the first dozen pages but come on, that's awesome. The print is DEFINITELY smaller than normal but I think that's because the book would be twice the size. Sure, the photos aren't labeled but you can figure out an egglant dish vs a salmon dish if you read the page with ingredient list and know what food looks like. Stress the "what food looks like" part. It's not a beginner cook book which I think is the problem most people have (especially the ones needing captions on the photos). I'm not upset I purchased it. It has easy and more skilled recipes but explains things with reference to another page if you don't know how to make the basics. Get it if you are familiar with cooking east Asian cuisine. Don't if you're still reading The Joy of Cooking.

This is one of the best written Japanese cookbooks I've come across. It is written with a foreign reader's unfamiliarity towards the cuisine in mind, so it explains what the dish is about, and ultimately how the author puts her twist on it or how she replaces certain ingredients to build flavour. And the recipes are 100% easy to follow. Useful for both professional chefs and home cooks.

Very good and detailed recipes and information on the various dishes of Japan. I only wish it was broken down by region and that there were photos of every completed dish.Otherwise, it’s a great book for japonophiles

In his own roundabout way, the author will lay out for you concepts and answers to questions that you may not have considered relevant.Notwithstanding the hype evidenced on the book covers and the introduction by the author's son, a highly-regarded and well-known investment manager, the author has credentials that money cannot buy. That would be fifty years of being a successful , professional, private investment manager. In this book, he will bring that experience into play as well focusing on factors that are not covered by the mainstream financial media, or as he refers to them as "the financial community. There are no one size fits all strategy in the investing world the magic frmula works for Buffett but he is one in a million. This book drives home the point - especially for the novice - that investing (rather than speculating) is not easy and is a complex process. Being emotionless and keeping disciplined with one's approach can allow for gains and success as a disciplined investor.

Must read! This book explains the investment philosophy of how Fisher finds growth stocks that lead to massive gains if held forever! It also includes his other writings such as Conservative Investors Sleep Well. I won't go into too much detail as to spoil the book but this is a great read for any investor.

Those who are familiar with growth investing are likely well-versed in Philip A. Fisher. This volume serves as his most well-known work that details his investment mandate and criteria for selecting and timing investments, among other material. If you are looking to develop a growth strategy or want to compare and contrast vs. value oriented investing you would do well to read this book.

Fantastic book about investing. Mr. Fisher describes his experience starting out in the investment business just before the great depression and the 50 or so years that followed. He calls himself a growth investor, but I think anyone looking for a good solid foundation in value investing, ala Ben Graham, Warren Buffet, or Joel Greenblat, should give this book a shot.

Book's preface is a short biography of the Author written by his son - Kenneth L. Fisher. It's definitely worth reading as it properly sets the mood for the book.The book itself is quite old, so some circumstances considered by Mr. Fisher may be obsolete (cold war), but I'd say that most of the content is quite timeless. Especially Mr. Fisher's recipe for a good analysis of long-term growth investment opportunity (the process is referred to as scuttlebutt).As for contents of the book, I see 3 distinct areas:1. Very detailed description of scuttlebutt method (the most valuable part, in my opinion),2. Mr. Fisher's insights when considering particular circumstances connected with investing,3. The last chapter is a step-by-step guide on how to be Mr. Fisher (or work like him at least).Mr. Fisher's style is quite formal but restrained in the wording. For me, it was a perfect read.

With more snark than ever, Piper’s character development in Black Crow was perfection. She rose to the occasion and accepted her destiny but not without her humorous, colorful language, which made this novel such fun to read. I really can’t get enough of Piper. With more love than bickering, the relationship between Piper and Zane will melt your heart into a puddle. I just love them together. It’s the perfect amount of romance with hints of mystery while they fight to find out if they have a place together in a world that wants nothing more than to see them apart.I devoured this book in two nights and look forward to reading the conclusion. If you like soul mate stories, good versus evil, and hot book boyfriends, Black Crow is perfect for you. I highly recommend it.

Wow what an amazing book! Piper has to make a number of hard decisions in this book as she navigates her beginnings at the White Raven. Her chemistry with Zane increases as they have more time together and feelings are harder to resists. I really enjoyed getting to know Zander and Parker more in this book. Piper's powers are amazing and the experiences she goes through to learn about her different powers are nail biting and hot (when Zane's involved). I look forward to the next book. Well done J.L. I absolutely adore this series and it is one of my go to series for rereading. Piper is the type of main character I adore. She is sassy, strong, and makes me laugh. Sadly though, this book has an underlying theme of grief which is a little heartbreaking, especially after everything we have seen Piper go through. However, she doesn't let this hold her back. She moves forward and does what she needs to. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for an amazing series, with strong character and feels.

This series is a definite first for me, I've never read a series where the female lead was a banshee and I'm hooked. In Black Crow Piper has to grow up really fast as she embraces what it means to be The White Raven. In a world that she doesn't understand and that feels foreign to her she has to rely on her instincts when it comes to making the difficult decisions. That includes choosing between love and obligation. Piper is snarky and challenging and in the midst of everything that is happening around her she finds herself.In short, I have really enjoyed getting to know this world of reapers. If not for some editing issues I would have given it five stars. Can't wait to read Soul Symmetry.

This second book in the series has really put the pedal to the metal as there is one shock after another, plot twist after twist. The main characters have all begun to develop some depth, and while there are no cliffhangers per se, there is plenty of fuel for the next book. The editing is tighter, though are still a rough spot or two, but overall, improving by leaps and bounds. I am looking forward to the next installment.

This is a new author to me and I’ve completely fallen for the works put into this fabulous story of Zane and piper. Its unfortunate that few of the main characters were killed off but it surely has you flipping and flipping because you truly get sucked into the world the author has created. I can’t wait to read the next installment.

Reading the love/hate relationship between the main character and her soulmate is soooo enticing. Reading how the main character is changing has me not wanted to put the book down. I recommend this series to all those who love the supernatural and love.

I absolutely love this series. The only down side is having to wait for the next one to come out! I typically don't read a series until all the books are out but I read the first one with out realizing it. This book is just as phenomenal as the first one. I am on pins and needles waiting on the second. I enjoy the complex characters and the struggles that they are facing. It isn't one of those series where I can guess what will happen in the very end by the end of the first book. It sucks you in and keeps your attention.

I bought this book by mistake. (Sorry Adam.) I thought Bill Bryson was the author. Then I started reading it and quickly realized my favorite author did not write the book but was only recommending it. However, with each unfolding paragraph, I found a laugh-out-loud, but highly insightful and informative book, with insight not only into the facts and absurdities of the places described, but insights into the author’s self-deprecating self. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and immediately began sharing what I was learning with friends. I will buy a copy for my son, who has long aspired to be Adam, not knowing someone like Adam exists in reality. I will read the other books written by Adam, and look forward to his future works as well.

Don’t Go There by Adam Fletcher is described as “From Chernobyl to North Korea-- One Man’s Quest to Lose Himself and Find Everyone Else in the World’s Strangest Places.” The subtitle probably suffers from a politically correct faux pas; in chapter one Adam is losing himself in Turkey but companion Annett is with him. It is not “one man’s” quest until Adam manages to piss Annett off. However, it is a travel novel and for the constant traveler such as myself, this book is automatically interesting. Reading this will introduce potential travelers to practices that might be a culture shock to the unprepared. For instance, in Chapter One Annett and Adam are in Turkey where during anti-government demonstrations they observe much of the population protesting in the streets by banging on kitchen pots and pans. Fletcher describes this as a time-honored tradition going back to 1923 during the time of Kemal Atatürk.The pair has an adventure on a bus in China that takes place over more than forty hours. That is forty hours on a bus that is not moving. Drivers are waiting for authorities to lift a barricade. There are lessons for the reader. When traveling in the lesser developed world (the countryside of China) take plenty of food and water. This was a familiar situation to me, one which I nearly copied a few years ago in Cambodia.Similar cautions apply when traveling in Africa. Adam and Annett traveled to Ghana. They toured schools run by a volunteer agency and discovered an interesting phenomenon. Locals assumed that the two could be the source of donations for further education. When they tried to explain they were in Ghana as tourists on a vacation, the answer was “You came to Ghana for vacation?” The questioners adopted a tone of amazement when asking this question.The excursion to Israel glosses over an important point. Travelers who previously visited several Muslim countries are going to have problems getting through immigration checks and procuring a visa. Adam and Annett even crossed from Jerusalem into Palestine controlled areas. This section is heavier on philosophy than humor but is still worth reading.The dialogue between Adam and Annett is hilarious. She is the sensible one, the one who believes in making plans and thinking before starting out. She is not shy about blaming Adam when things go wrong, in other words frequently. Her criticisms mostly contain a lot of wry humor. Adam is a guy who thinks about something, launches, and then reacts to the flow of things. Adam is also remarkably averse to work. He has found a way to make money as a nomad with a computer. Annett has a job which requires her physical presence; this also serves as an anchor for Adam so that he is not perpetually traveling. The pair has a residence hub in Berlin where they can recover from developing world realities between trips.This is a hilarious travel book. I don’t see any danger of revealing spoilers. I want to comment on some of the conditions they meet and how they deal with problems, but they are only samples. The book is full of practical issues and occasionally some philosophizing on the nature of war, income inequality, and what should be international human rights. Even the philosophizing is hilarious as it provokes serious thought.A part of any traveler’s journey, desired or not, is the wonderful interactions with other travelers and expatriates. I am being sarcastic; I avoid prolonged social engagements with other travelers. Adam and Annett have the benefit of supporting each other. This is also good advice, companions at least act in a predictable way. Again, there is a lot of humor as Adam and Annett meet some complete whackos.The Hare Krishna Ashram in Argentina experience broke up the Adam-Annett team as far as further travel outside Germany. Annett was tired of not having creature comforts available. Adam went on to visit Chernobyl, a couple of micro-nations, and Romania. There is an interesting section on his return to his hometown in England. There are very good observations on travel in general, the idea that you may be able to go home again, and the very decent idea that adventures are everywhere. It is just a point of view.If anything in the book is a spoiler, it is the details of a trip to North Korea. I won’t comment on it. It is worth reading for humor, philosophy, and information not generally known. I gave this four Amazon stars because the first part of the book was hilarious up until the time Annett went back to Germany. Adam traveling alone is not as interesting. But he does get his groove back so the novel ends on a high note (with humor) also.

A must read! This book is a true eye opener. Mr. Fletcher and his girlfriend travel to places that are not recommended for tourism to find out why. And they do find out why. All are told with a lot of humor but are also well grounded in truth. Told in a way that makes you feel you are there with them. Mr. Fletcher paints a very vivid picture. I finished reading this book a couple days ago and I am still feeling the shock of their trip to North Korea and the description of what they saw there. There is nothing funny about life in North Korea. How in todays world can a place like North Korea exist? Very sobering.

I really enjoyed traveling with Adam to places no sane person would visit throughout the world, from Chernobyl to North Korea. It was truly fascinating, with his romance with Anet a delightful sub-plot. The reader will see how Adam grows and evolves from an adventuresome guy to settling down to adulthood and responsibility, after his grand adventures. A truly good, highly recommended book for anyone who enjoys true non-fiction off the beaten path. I actually sat up all night to finish it.

This book is underpriced.I have recently read some overly serious and pretentious travel books. This is not one of them. This author has a lot of humility and ability to laugh at himself. And he has very good reason to be laughed at, frankly. He and his descriptions make this book so funny. I have laughed pretty hard reading it.Sometimes a book or movie will be good for further laughs a week, or a year later. I think this is definitely one of those books.I also identified with the unexpected events that happen while traveling. If you can laugh, it changes everything.

With humor, pathos, and insight, Adam takes readers on trips to exotic and sometimes absurd locales they’d probably never choose to visit themselves. He is a delightful travel companion with a fresh, self-deprecating voice and a clever way of acquainting us with the little-known corners of the world. I especially appreciated his kind, forgiving views about the “different” experiences he had. I feel like I’ve been on a slow bus through China, North Korea, Russia and a few spots I had never even heard of before. I loved this quick, fun, humorous read and want to read MORE by this wonderful writer!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Adam, whilst in pursuit of meaningfulness in his life, ventures to God-forsaken destinations to experience the local lore and encounters interesting characters and situations. The narrative is great and brings to mind travel logs many of us keep during our own travels, except Adam's are more entertaining! I found at the end of each chapter (location) I'd wish he'd stayed a bit longer and shared a bit more. His return to his hometown was insightful and probably my favorite chapter. Except maybe North Korea. Well done, Adam.
