This is a very colorful, visually stimulating introduction to volcanoes and earthquakes. It was a gift for an 8 year old nephew and he seemed to appreciate it a lot. It would be appropriate for kids from 4-10, depending on the kid.

This is a great book. The illustrations are fantastic, and the content is easy to understand. My eight-year-old grandson fell in love with it. Made a terrific Christmas present!

I've been working on a research project on Roger Williams for months now and was using a hardcover set of his complete writings through a inter-library loan at my school. Researching this way was really inconvenient between trying to keep all my notes on his writings organized, not being able to mark up the text (which is understandable), and also dealing with libraries not allowing me to have the books long enough to finish my research.Finding this volume was a godsend! It made my research ten times easier. The price alone made the purchase worth it, I paid over $60 for a copy of Williams's George Fox Digg'd Out of His Burrowes before I found this.

Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, was a controversial and influential figure in New England. His views on freedom of religion and his belief that the Natives, not the King of England were the sole owners of their land got him banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony.He maintained correspondence with friends among his former colleagues there who valued his friendship, if not his ideas. His letters were gathered and published by R. I. Historical society as part of his complete writings early in the 20th century. Those publications became hard to find. It is wonderful that these reprints are available now.

A few years ago I sought out the writings of Roger Williams. There were none to be had. This vital figure of major historical importance was silent, for the most part. Which seems especially peculiar given his relevance for so many contemporary questions of church and state.I found a set of his collected writings in the library of my alma mater, but I was hoping to have a little more ability to sit with these great texts, as well as make the occasional note and use as references whenever I needed. So, I was a little discouraged in my burgeoning Williams interest.Then I noticed the collected works were being re-released. Very wonderful.These are not newly edited texts. These are the facsimiles of a much older collection, which is obvious in the retention of old printer habits, which is most noticable, for this modern eye, in the absence of most 's' characters replaced by the 'f' looking character, a curious addition given the mid-1800s original publication. A little awkward to read at first, but it does give a historical feel to these newly bound, glossy covered texts.In Volume 2 we don't read much of Williams. Instead we are treated to a continuation of the dialogue between Williams and John Cotton.In these pages Cotton dominates, with his "Answer to Roger Williams" taking up pages 1-240, followed by the very brief "Queries of Highest Consideration" filling pages 241-276.I would hope there is before too long a newly edited version of these great letters and writings, but for now, these are the volumes to get and enjoy

About the Author

H. L. Mencken was born in Baltimore in 1880 and died there in 1956. He began his long career as a journalist, critic, and philologist on the Baltimore Morning Herald in 1899. In 1906 he joined the staff of the Baltimore Sun, thus beginning an association that lasted until a few years before his death. He was coeditor of the Smart Set with George Jean Nathan from 1908 to 1923, and with Nathan he founded The American Mercury, a magazine of which he was sole editor from 1925 to 1933. He was the author of many books, most notably The American Language, Prejudices, Happy Days, Newspaper Days, Heathen Days, and Minority Report.Alistair Cooke enjoyed an extraordinary career in print, radio, and television. Born in Salford, England, in 1908 and educated at Cambridge, Yale, and Harvard, he was the BBC’s film critic from 1934 to 1937. He then returned to America and became a US citizen in 1941. Cooke was the Guardian’s chief American correspondent for 25 years and was the host of groundbreaking cultural programs on American television and of the BBC series America, which led to the international bestselling book Alistair Cooke’s America. Cooke was made an honorary KBE in 1973 for his outstanding contribution to Anglo-American understanding, and received many other awards, including the Peabody Award, the Dimbleby Award, four Emmy Awards, and the Benjamin Franklin Award. Cooke was, however, best known at home and abroad for his weekly BBC broadcast Letter from America, which reported on 58 years of American life, was heard on more than five continents, and totaled 2,869 broadcasts before his retirement in February 2004. He wrote most of the scripts for Letter from America on an ancient Royal typewriter in his New York apartment overlooking Central Park, where he raised his family and lived with his wife, Jane White, until his death in March of 2004.

A lot of people are probably familiar with Mencken through one of his many witty aphorisms but, as this collection aptly demonstrates, his longer writings are also well worth reading. Divided into several sections based on topic, this book provides a good selection of pieces of varying lengths. There were so many great quotes, that I lost track. Personally, I love his approach to politics and religion, and there were plenty of applicable quotes in that regard. The only quibble I have is to do with this Kindle edition: Part of an essay on Oliver Wendell Holmes is missing, and the editing job could have been better. Other than that, this is a solid collection that is worth your time and money.

Mencken is one of those guys you wish you could have a few beers with on a Friday evening after a tough week beating off the idiots. His writing is priceless and filled with trenchant observations about his life and times. His views on government and politics is just as relevant and biting today as when he was at odds with the fools and the demagogues.

As enjoyable as it is to read Mr. Mencken, it isn't all fun. He imparts some uncomfortable truths about our culture and the rest of the world. If you're the least bit cynical and enjoy humorous satire you'll very much like this book.

A good introduction, but not enough of his quotes.

Ok, so I first got into reading Mencken last year. I read some of his works in selections like Prejudices and other book series he did that this book takes from. The MAJOR problem I have with this book, is that yes these essays are probably among the most controversial; and yes they are 'biting' an often funny. But for people new to Mencken I highly recommend looking elsewhere and starting his his collections first. You get a better feel for him and his opinions/life that way. Prejudices, Happy Days, Heathen Days, The Smart SetAlso, if you can find them I'd try Walter Murdoch. Great stuff from him.

The first I ever heard of HL Mencken was when I read his obit with a pic of his moon face with a stubby cigar in the middle of his mouth and the worst haircut I ever saw parted in the middle. I realized then I had to read him, and a few days later I found The Vintage Mencken in a campus bookstore. That was October '55 and I was an eighteen year old college freshman.A month ago I found myself recommending The Vintage Mencken to a friend, and my pitch was so successful that I bought another copy from Amazon. I haven't reread all of it yet, but I have reread a few favorite essays, like Star-Spangled Men and his coverage of the Scopes trial, in which he eviscerates William Jennings Bryan.As an eighteen year old Okie this book opened me to a wider world. Rereading it I'm looking back on a smaller one, but the essays are still among the wittiest, most insightful and informative I've ever read. I'd recommend them to anybody with a good mind and a rebellious streak.

No doubt the man was a gifted wordsmith and an entertaining read. But his colorful irascibility about practically anything under the sun did get tiresome at some points in this selection. His quasi-obituary about William Jennings Bryan was one hell of a mean-spirited diatribe. Wow, talk about kicking a person when their down. Also, I don't ever recall having to use my electronic dictionary so frequently with any other author. Half the fun was laughing when I discovered the meanings of some of the words he had used. Yet, despite Mr. Mencken's surliness, his remarkable writing and insights made the book well worth reading. Just keep your dictionary handy.

What I didn't know about gravity could fit into a book and it did. Made me realize how important it is to humankind to get a clear, accurate understanding of exactly how gravity works.

A fascinating trip via gravity through the leading problems of physics in a consummately readable fashion. I was so disappointed when it suddenly ended in footnotes that may just start over. Similar to but better than Alice in Wonderland, it just constantly tugs at your mind in wonderful way. Read it. Full stop.

Very interesting and well written read overall. Toward the end, though, it seemed more about theories that appear not to offer testable hypotheses, which are hard to accept as "science."

The history is well done - and it's a pleasant read. But I was disappointed that the treatment of various theories of quantum gravity is shallow to non-existent.

Very understandable for the armchair physicist. Vey enjoyable reading. We had a way to go to better grasp the Concept Of gravity.

Really great book. I've actually listened to it over and over.

I bought this book and the Bergers' Harvest Craft Book at the same time, not knowing that this book is a collection of crafts from The Harvest Craft Book,The Christmas Craft Book, and The Easter Craft Book. This is a new edition, and though I have not seen the older one, I can compare between the Harvest Craft Book (which is an older edition), and this one. I tried a few of the straw crafts, and the instructions were noticeably better in the new book. It did not contain every craft from the other book (i really liked the straw horse in the Harvest Craft book, but it looked difficult), understandably, but there are 46 projects in total, divided up for the four seasons. There are lovely color pictures of each of the finished projects, and some hand-drawn illustrations with the directions. I would say these crafts are for generally for age 5-6 years and up, though there are some that younger children will enjoy with help and their skill would increase as they grow. The project materials include edible dough, paper, straw/wheat/cornhusk, natural materials, yarn/knitting, beeswax, felt/fabric/simple sewing, and wool. I expect to be able to share these projects with children and friends for years.

As someone who was formerly a child and now has two children of her own, I don't think the crafts in this book are the least bit fun. I paged through the entire book, and the crafts aren't for kids in my opinion. They just look boring. I rated the book two stars because there are some cool crafts in it, just not for kids. And the description specifically says it's for children. I would more say that the book is for older women looking to make neat decorations for their homes. So basically the book is being marketed to the wrong demographic.
