Dr. A. Gary Shilling is president of A. Gary Shilling & Company, Inc., economic consultants and investment advisors, managing individual and institutional accounts. The firm also publishes INSIGHT, a monthly report of economic forecasts and investment strategy, and Dr. Shilling advises Thematic Investment Partners and Thematic Futures Fund, investment partnerships oriented toward economic, financial, and political themes. A regular columnist for Forbes magazine, he has been twice ranked as Wall Street's top economist by Institutional Investor magazine's poll of financial institutions , and Futures magazine ranked him the country's number one Commodity Trading Advisor in 1993. Although Dr. Shilling does not yet manage any mutual funds, CNBC anchor Bill Griffeth was so impressed with his investment approach that he profiled him along with 19 well-known mutual fund managers in his 1995 book, The Mutual Fund Masters. Dr. Shilling is well known for his forecasting record. In the spring of 1969 he was among the few who correctly saw that a recession would start late in the year. In 1973 he stood almost alone in forecasting that the world was entering a massive inventory building spree to be followed by the first major worldwide recession since the 1930s. In the late 1970s, when most thought that raging inflation would last forever, he was the first to predict that the changing political mood of the country would lead to an end of severe inflation, as well as to potentially serious financial and economic readjustment problems. His first book, co-authored with Kiril Sokoloff, was published by McGraw-Hill in the spring of 1983 and entitled Is Inflation Ending? Are You Ready? In it, the authors answered the first question in the title with a resounding yes. But to the second they said, no, you're not ready. Your investments, your business, and your personal life are geared to inflation lasting forever, not disinflation. Your portfolio is crammed full of tangible assets like coins, antiques, and real estate the great inflation hedges of the 1965-80 era of accelerating prices, but assets that would suffer as inflation rates fell. At the same time, you own far too few financial assets, especially stocks and bonds disastrous investments in periods of high inflation, but great winners in disinflation. Inflation, however, was so deeply ingrained in everyone's thinking that the initial signs of its exit were ignored. The book's reviewers basically dismissed the authors' ideas. But by the mid 1980s, their forecast of inflation's demise began to look credible. In a delayed victory of sorts, David Warsh of the Boston Globe essentially reviewed the book in that newspaper's March 13, 1986, edition, and Bruce Ramsey did the same for the April 2, 1986, issue of the Seattle Post Intelligence in an article entitled "A preposterous economic prediction that came true." By then inflation rates not only had fallen considerably, but stocks and bonds were thriving while tangibles were in trouble. Dr. Shilling was convinced that more of the same lay ahead because the world of shortages seemed to be over and a world of surpluses was in prospect. His second book, The World Has Definitely Changed New Economic Forces and Their Implications for the Next Decade (Lakeview Press, 1986) , spelled out this thesis. The 1987 stock market crash raised the possibility that deflation and not just low inflation might be in the cards, and his third book, After the Crash, Recession or Depression? (Lakeview Economic Services, 1988), explored this idea. Despite the title, he wasn't specifically forecasting deflation, but came closer to doing so when he, assisted by Anne D. Willard, created "The Deflation Game" in 1989. It's a Monopoly-like board game that is biased toward winning with financial asset holdings and losing with tangibles. Dr. Shilling is widely recognized as the world's oldest living disinflationist, since his forecast of low inflation is over 20 years old and his suggestion of possible deflation has been around for about a decade. He received his A.B. degree in physics, magna cum laude, from Amherst College, where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics at Stanford University. Before establishing his own firm in 1978, Dr. Shilling was Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of White, Weld & Co., Inc. Earlier he set up the Economics Department at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith at age 29 and served as the firm's first chief economist. Prior to Merrill Lynch, he was with Standard Oil Co. (N.J.) where he was in charge of U.S. and Canadian economic analysis and forecasting. In addition to writing for Forbes, Dr. Shilling is a columnist for Standard & Poor's CreditWeek and a member of The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japan Economic Journal) Board of Economists. He appears frequently on business radio and television shows. Dr. Shilling is on the Board of Directors of National Life of Vermont, the Heartland Group of mutual funds, the American Productivity and Quality Center, Palm Harbor Homes, the Episcopal Evangelism Foundation of which he is Chairman; an Advisory Director of Austin Trust Company; a Trustee and the Treasurer of the General Theological Seminary (Episcopal); and a Chairman of the New Jersey State Revenue Forecasting Advisory Commission. Good explanation of why inflation probably will not be a problem in the not too distant future.His reasons: demographics (boomers are aging and buy less) (generations since boomers have been smaller, purchase as much to keep prices rising) (virtually no wage gains for so long means companies cannot pass on price increases) (low interest rates for a long time do not seem to have generated run away inflation) (increased competition all over the world)This is a good book on a subject most folks haven't considered. This book would give a good foundation in the concept of deflation - it was last serious during the Great Depression of the 30's.

Good source of what to consider when trying to decipher situation, old data

Deflation never happened. Maybe it was all the money the Fed pumped into the economy for problems that never happened like the Y2K or Millennium bug. Then we got the housing and real estate bubbleflation followed by a panic and more money pumping. With so much officious meddling how can you forecast anything? I guess we'll just have to keep on flying by the seat of the pants.

Shilling predicts good - rather than bad deflation (at least for the USA): i.e. surging demand absorbing excess supply because of price falls. It is a US-centric view - weaker on the international side. Deflation addresses an important & neglected subject. The slow start is tolerable because of good, up-to-date graphs and data generally. Happily he is consultant-clear rather than economist-arcane. His analysis of the US economy is compelling & useful for foreign readers. Nonetheless, there are questions: will policymakers (including central bankers) not adjust; e.g. I understand that defense spending has started rising again. Shilling's review of factors such as the internet is useful. The foreign material is poorer - though his Asian chapters are good. Bizarrely for such a serious & scholarly work, there is no index.Shilling is worth reading - he thinks the west will experience `good' rather than `bad' deflation - but how deep will the Deflation be and how long will it last? He could have usefully studied natural resources in more depth; after all, this is where deflation hit hardest and earliest. I will read him again.

A careful look at the book shows that Shilling's THEORY for deflation is based on the longwaves of Kondratieff. Shilling uses a real (as in real business cycle literature) rather than a monetary interpretation (a la Milton Friedman, Irving Fisher..) of longwaves which results in his use of 1974 (following the oil shock) rather than 1980 (following the tight monetary policies by central banks under the guise of Monetarist doctrine) as the beginning of the current wave down.

This book will help you make sense out of the headlines you have been seeing everyday in the business section of your paper. It will help you "connect the dots" about megatrends you maybe were aware of, but not taking into account with your investment decisions. I read this back in August 1998, and it is amazing how current events seem to be playing out almost exactly as forecasted in the book. You should not miss the chance to read this.

This is a great warning to beware of a series of ONE. Look how well it rated and look at the INFLATION we are facing now, this could change of course but only after the FED pushes inflation as far as it can without blow back. Predicting the future can be as hard as forecasting the weather.

About the Author

Katie Sherrod is a laywoman in the Diocese of Fort Worth. She is an independent writer, video producer and commentator. She wrote and produced Women of the Table, a 20-minute documentary about ministries of both lay and ordained women in the Episcopal Church which premiered at the 2003 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. She was given the Magadalen Award of the Episcopal Women’s Caucus at General Convention 2006. She has won several awards in newspaper, radio and TV including the Dallas Press Club Award for her 2001 PBS documentary Freedman’s Cemetery Memorial: A Place of Healing, narrated by Alfre Woodard; and the Exceptional Media Merit Award from the National Women's Political Caucus. She was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1987 for outstanding contributions in the field of communications, and named Texas Woman of the Year in 1989. She is married to the Rev. Gayland Pool, an Episcopal priest.

This is the second year that the Bible Study group at my church has used the book as a source of shared reading. It is frequently the cause of tears--both during the ghastly cruelty of the Roman soldiers and, of course, at the end. The structure of these speeches is based on the Stations of the Cross, told in the first person,each voice distinct. It is a remarkable piece of work and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the beginnings of the Christian faith.

For the past three years, my Episcopal church has used Katie Sherrod's meditations as the basis for our Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. This year I had the privilege of producing a pilgrimage for our congregation using this material. As the 'pilgrims' reached each station,they were greeted by a woman in a shawl and other props (mop bucket, seashells, etc.) and the woman told her story, using Ms. Sherrod's words. We heard from the Crippled Woman, the Syrophonecian Mother, the Adultress and others. The last three Stations tell the story through the words and hearts of Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of Jesus.This was the most meaningful experience I have ever witnessed at the Stations of the Cross, and I believe the same can be said for others in attendance.Next year, I hope to create the same journey, figuring a way to include the other 3 meditations that are not connected to a Station. Thank you, Ms. Sherrod, for a task extremely well-done.

Originally, The Innocence Project focused on newly developed DNA evidence to reverse convictions, but have expanded their efforts and now include official misconduct, tortured confessions, and false witness identifications, among other things.ANATOMY OF INNOCENCE highlights a few of their successful cases. A mother convicted of a 'shaken baby syndrome' death based on underdeveloped scientific evidence (the same doctor that played a role in her conviction helped to reverse it); a seventeen year old convicted of rape and murder, even though another person's DNA was present on the body; people convicted based on confessions signed only after abuse and false promises of release; a prosecutor who had exculpatory evidence that was discovered only after his sudden and unexpected death. All of the cases were compelling examples of what can go wrong in the American Justice System, most of them preventable if those charged with the administration of justice followed the rules, laws, Constitutional rights, and ethics that supposed to be sacrosanct to our system of justice.Many of the cases highlighted did more than tell the stories of the tragedies that led to the false convictions and incarcerations. They shared the awful experiences of the prison systems, the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans imprisoned in inadequate, antiquated, violent, and cruel prisons across the country that have absolutely no rehabilitative purpose, mistaking punishment for justice and, in the long run, likely cause more harm to society than good. In this regard, a few of the cases highlighted were more about the awful system than about the wrongful conviction and the hard work that led to its reversal; while compelling and worthy of a book or two on its own, I thought it deviated from the purpose of this book.

A previous writer had said the stories leave you hanging, they do not go into as much depth as one would like, I have to agree. Interesting stories, but more details would make it a better read. They breeze thru multiple years in prison like it was a 2 month stint, when it had to have been totally life altering. More detail would have been nice as to how they were exonerated also.

The organization of the book, from arrest to release, to life after wrongful imprisonment was a clever choice. I love the different voices of each exoneree told through each author. Heart wrenching facts that have changed the way I view our justice system.

It is hard to read sometimes. Not because its not written well but because it is so well written it gives you a front seat to the tremendously destructive so called Justice system and their carelessly, thoughtlessly destroying of people and their families. It is painful to read about what the exonerated have lived through, yet it isn't all about the misery it is about how they have overcome that torture and have a bright and hopeful outlook.

This book is a chilling reminder that our legal system is as flawed as we all are and its injustices are frightening. It is especially dangerous for those of us without the financial resources to effectively fight back. The stories here are all different in their telling and the same in their tales of suffering perseverance and compassion.

Anatomy of Innocence came in perfect condition and a little bit earlier than expected. Although I've just started it, I'm enjoying it so far. Would recommend to others.

Dr. Fawcett nails it! I've always been "good" with money, but Dr. Fawcett teaches the average doctor/ healthcare practitioner how to be great in terms they can routinely understand. I have read numerous books on debt management, financial management, physician debt management, etc, and this is the best one I have found. Dr. Fawcett makes a powerful case for getting out of debt as quickly as possible after residency, including paying off the mortgage early. Great read! Much of it is information that I already knew, but needed the reminder. There are a lot of useful gems in this book! I read it in my fourth year of medical school and plan to apply what I learned as I have just started residency.

I'm a dentist and an avid reader. I bought this book after seeing it mentioned on a blog (maybe white coat investor?). I read a lot of financial books and listen to a lot of dave Ramsey. Currently we are in the process of paying down massive debt. This book just reiterated all the concepts of building wealth and gave some good examples to keep the momentum going. I think it's a really good read for docs early in their careers to avoid some mistakes we made. However... there's something in it for everyone regardless of where you are on your journey.

I read this book in one sitting, but gained enough knowledge to feel I had been reading for days! A definite MUST read for any physician trying to turn the tide in his/her financial situation!

I really enjoyed this book. Dr. Fawcett makes a compelling argument for the benefits of living debt free and dispels a lot of myths about investing vs. paying down debt. An excellent companion piece with the WCI book. Thanks Dr. Fawcett!

This is an excellent book for those beginning or furthering their practice of Medieval Longsword. I've been practicing HEMA Longsword for a year as of the writing of this review, I refer back to this book frequently for insight on techniques and for drills and material for new students. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is beginning or wants to further their practice of longsword. Guy Windsor is a great writer and presents the material in the order that someone just starting can follow and be successful. It covers conditioning and stretching, the basics of footwork, strikes and parries, then goes into more situations and techniques that build off of the basics. Guy is intimately familiar with the writings of Fiore Dei Liberi and his interpretation of Fiore's work is the most complete and accurate that I've encountered. I recommended this book for anyone that is learning on their own, anyone who already belongs to a club, instructors and new students alike. Great material from a great source!

In the second volume of "Mastering the Art of Arms", Guy Windsor provides an excellent introductory on the medieval longsword for the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) enthusiast. This book focuses on basic longsword tactics and techniques of the fencing master Fiore dei Liberi from "Il Fior di Battaglia" (the Flower of Battle), an early 14th century Italian fencing treatise.Windsor has an objective writing style that is also fun to read and his explanations are easy to follow. Unfortunately, the original 15th-century artwork of fencing plays was not reproduced; however, Windsor illustrates fencing plays with step-by-step photographs captioned by detailed descriptions. He provides sound interpretations of Fiore's fencing plays and includes a solid set of exercises and drills rooted in the Italian master's style. It would have been nice if Windsor waited and combined the Fiore dagger plays with this volume, providing a much more comprehensive edition centering around the Italian tradition. Regardless, this book is a great introductory guide for any HEMA enthusiast seeking to understand Italian longsword basics!

Excellent material from a true practitioner and scholar. Great manual for beginners and old handsalike. Would have given five stars if it wasn't black and white. This and the size of the images made some of the sequences difficult to follow. I would also like to know how much different this is from his two editions of Swordsmans Companion.

Guy has a methodical approach to Fiore's system that is unique in it's approach to fundamentals. Structure, positioning, and footwork are discussed in great deal as they are the foundation of the arts. What's better is there is no physical skill mentioned in the book that Guy does not give some sort of exercise for, which means that as a training manual there is no equal to the Mastering the Art of Arms series. There is a growing number of secondary interpretations of Fiore's work out there but none stand out so much as Guy's in clarity, accessibility, and simplicity. As someone without access to a great deal of HEMA training in my area I can say that before I discovered the Mastering the Art of Arms series and Guy's work generally I was floundering a bit, but Guy has given me and my study group a curriculum with all the nuts and bolts exposed and highlighted, and for that I am infinitely grateful.

This is my first reading and I was very pleased. However, I am also unclear on a number of points, particularly in the section that discusses the bind. The wiki videos were helpful, but in some cases a closer look at the action in the video is needed to see what actions are being applied. This is still a very helpful book. Hopefully my second reading will clarify my confusion.I. highly recommend this book.

This is what broke me into the world of HEMA, and is an all around great book. You will not become a swordmaster after reading (any book), but Guy does a wonderful job easing your into the mindset necessary to understand how actual sword fighting works.A note for us U.S. folks: Guy and his school are based in Europe, so some of his gear recommendations are not as easily recommended to someone on this side of the world.

This book presently has half a dozen bookmarks in it. Very helpful if you're starting down the path of Historical European combat. Clearly written, well organized and definitely my best assistant when it comes to understanding the basics of sword combat laid out in Il Fior di Battaglia
