I read his first book, Puerto Vallarta on 49 Brain Cells a Day, while on vacation in PV. It was hilarious, not just because I was drinking Marguaritas between shots of tequilla, Gevins' take on everything from Mexican pyrotechnics to his maid and her superstitions is written with a wonderful knack for turning a sentence into a elegant exaggeration. I bought his other two books, including Refried Brains and PV on a Donkey a Day. If you have ever vacationed in Mexico you'll enjoy his nearly unbelievable exploits, and if you haven't, his stories might persuade you never to go. He's got a real talent for taking readers on his wild adventures in short blasts of 2 to 4 pages that will cause anyone in the room where you're reading to wonder why you laughed out loud. One caution, however, he writes about drinking racilla, a version of Mexican moonshine made from a different cactus than tequilla. As a result of reading about it my friends and I ordered some while visiting Yelapa. I cannot tell you how awful it is, but Gevins tells you in one of the short episodes that when John Huston, the director of the movie, Night of the Iguana, shot in PV, that Huston described drinking racilla as like, dropping LSD, drinking gasoline and putting your head in a blender. I'll never know, I took one whiff, passed the glass to my friends and ordered tequilla. So why did I only give it 4 stars? I've been drinking shots and hit the wrong star, meant 5.
I live in Puerto Vallarta and know what raicilla can do to one's actions. Keep on trecking, buddy!

I've real all four books by this author, and he is consistently hilarious! All the stories, which are supposed to be true, and may well be, take place in Mexico, where this slightly unhinged American has taken up residence. My favortie story was entitled: Stuck Between A Mariachi and a Hard Place. But they are all well-written, entertaining, and above all, really funny. Oh, and my second favorite is entitled, Twenty Thousand Bowel Movements Beneath the Terrace.
