I recently did a homeschooling unit on Ancient Egypt with my lower elementary kids. But I really wanted to connect their study, somehow, to present day Egypt. Obviously there is not much connection since Egypt is currently Muslim rather than polytheistic. So I settled on reading this biography to the kids. I thought giving them some information about a Christian missionary would help them bridge that gap.It definitely did. This book was awesome. My kids loved it, and I think it worked almost better than a devotional. My eight year old just couldn't get over how many thousands of children Lillian helped. She was like a modern day St. Nicholas, or an African George Mueller. When we looked on Amazon for another book on her, we couldn't find one in print. That makes this book even more valuable as her story is one children can relate to very easily. I was worried that they might be scared by some of the things that happened to her, but they came away in awe.Lastly, it is very difficult to find great stories about missionaries in North Africa/Middle East. You don't want to miss this! Thanks to YWAM for including this amazing testimony from that region.

I gave this book a 5 star rating because Lillian is an amazing roll model of full committment to Christ.As a teen ager she gave up her marriage plans, friends, parents wishes and the luxuries she enjoyed.She had a deep calling by the Lord to care for orphans and this calling led her to her amazing ministry to thousandsof orphans in Egypt. Her journey was a life of total dependance on God to provide every need on a daily basis. Herlove and radiance shines through the book.

We used this to supplement our study of Ancient Egypt. I wanted our family to read about a missionary in each of the places we study. We loved this story about Lillian Trasher and her love for the orphan children in Egypt. What a strong christian woman.

"Lillian Trashed" was really good. I would suggest it to anyone 10 and up, who was interested in missions or a particular missionary. Janet and Geoff are the only writers I read when reading this genre of books. This book is one of my favs because of the message of trusting God that Lillian portrays throughout her life. <3 <3

Her love for people of a different race and nationality, social class, and religion is extraordinary. This story reinforced for me the power of prayer and trust in God. I recommend it to every Christian, especially women and girls.

Nat Turner was a African American slave in Southampton County Virginia who was born in 1800. He led a slave rebellion in August 1831 and was executed that November. When he was in jail awaiting execution, a white lawyer named Thomas R. Gray visited him and wrote down Turner's own story which was published in 1831 as The Confessions of Nat Turner. This is not to be confused with the 1967 novel of the same title by the white Virginia author William Styron. However both Styron's novel and the graphic novel Nat Turner by Kyle Baker are derived from Gray's original Confessions.The illustrations for Baker's Nat Turner wordlessly illustrate the original 1831 Confessions which appears as text set in the graphic novel. The words of the original Confessions and Baker's graphic narrative enhance each other, creating a most powerful document for understanding Turner's life and motivation. Originally self published as a four part series, Nat Turner sold out two printings and won several prizes in 2006, including an Eisner Award for best reality-based work. Since 2008 it has been published as a single volume through a commercial press.Part One is called "Home" and tells the story prior to that covered in Gray's Confessions of Nat Turner of Nat's mother being captured in Africa by slavers, transported to the coast, and put onto a slave ship to America where she is sold as a slave. Part Two is called "Education" and tells the remarkable story of Nat, a gifted child with mysterious powers, who can read, who is deeply spiritual, and starts to receive visions and messages. At the same time, he is witness to the brutality of human slavery all around him and as it effects him and his parents, wife and children. After his wife and children are sold away from him, his visions take a dark turn where he sees white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle and blood flowing in streams. He is told to be prepared to receive a sign to begin his fight against the Serpent. The first sign of a solar eclipse marks the beginning of Part Three - Freedom in which Nat starts to tell a select group of close associates of his visions and they make plans for the rebellion. The Great Barbados hurricane of August 1831, which turned the Sun blue as far north as Virginia was to Nat Turner, the sign he had been waiting for to begin the slaughter. He and his four allies went into houses in the dark of night, killing all the whites, taking their weapons and horses, and recruiting followers from their slaves. Before they were eventually stopped, there were about 60 armed freed slaves following him and over 55 dead whites in their trail. Part Four - Triumph details Turner's last days.I had read Gray's book The Confessions of Nat Turner prior to reading Baker's graphic novel, and I find the combination of the hauntingly expressive images with the simple straightforward text an exceedingly effective manner to present Nat Turner's life and activities to a modern audience. The story is compelling to me because I live just two hours from the site of the rebellion, and slave conditions would have been the same here as they were for Nat Turner in Virginia. Baker has made the story one that I will never forget. At the end of the book is a Bibliography of further readings and a Teacher's Guide that would make this a powerful classroom instructional tool.

This is Kyle Baker’s amazing graphic novel biography of Nat Turner, the leader of the bloodiest slave rebellion in the United States. Turner was a slave living in Virginia. He’d taught himself to read, because it was illegal to teach slaves to read — slaveowners didn’t want educated slaves because they were more likely to rebel. Turner’s interest in reading was mainly so he could study the Bible, and his knowledge and high moral character had many fellow slaves referring to him as a prophet — he also had periodic visions which he believed came to him from God.One of his visions, combined with a few convenient solar eclipses, eventually convinced him that God wanted him to lead a battle against the forces of evil. And in the American South of the 1830s, evil was definitely well-represented among white slaveowners.When Turner and his accomplices began their rebellion, they initially stuck with quiet weapons — knives, axes, farming implements — rather than guns, and they didn’t just kill slaveowners — they killed women and children, too. They spared poor whites who they felt were as downtrodden as slaves, but they still ended up killing 60 people and amassing a force of 70 slaves and free blacks. Turner himself is believed to have killed only one person — he was extremely smart, but he was a lousy fighter.The rebellion was put down after two days, but Turner was able to hide out for several months. When he was finally captured, he was tried and sentenced to be hanged. He was also beheaded, and his body was buried in an unmarked grave.Kyle Baker’s book takes most of its text from Thomas Ruffin Gray’s book, “The Confessions of Nat Turner,” which included extensive interviews with Turner during his trial and before his execution. His art illustrates passages from the book, or interprets common episodes in the lives of slaves. There is very little dialogue or word balloons, and the art is entirely black, white, and sepia-toned brown.Turner’s story is an amazing one. He’s not a pure hero or villain — yes, he fought against terrific injustice, but he committed widespread murders. Baker depicts Turner warts and all — but I think it’s clear he sympathizes with him and his cause.It’s a stark and brutal story, frequently very violent. Turner and his rebels massacre families, ambush people in their homes, behead children — their actions shock us, and I think, rightfully so. But it’s still very hard not to sympathize — Turner’s actions aren’t sugarcoated, but it’s also made very clear that he’s living in a terribly unjust world, where slaves were subjected to horrible punishments for crimes like reading and playing drums. Slaveowners were said to be terrified of slave rebellions — and a lot of that terror may have been because they knew they deserved whatever the slaves would do to them.If you only know Baker’s work from his wonderful “Plastic Man” series from a few years ago, this story will probably knock you out of your socks. His cartoonish style on DC’s comedic series is nowhere to be seen here. The art is, at turns, rough-hewn and furious, and then lushly rendered and gloriously lit, sometimes crudely emotional, sometimes shockingly beautiful, and sometimes both at once.It’s a fantastic story about an unsung American freedom fighter, beautifully illustrated by one of our great graphic storytellers. You should pick it up.

I was impressed with the artwork in Nat Turner the graphic novel. I could see this novel being used in either middle school or the early high school years. The novel explained slavery quite well with the pictures. I did not think that a graphic novel could explain Nat Turner story appropriately but I was wrong. I highly recommend this graphic novel.

The graphics are as expected. But the print quality is not great, and the images are reduced too much.If I had bought it in a store (not online), I would have seen the problem.

Masterful strokes and shading produced a remarkable visual account of the circumstance of this historic figure. It has the feel of both a documentary and movie combined. Very little to read yet it wasn't a barrier in communication in the slightest. An instant classic and collectors item.

We use this to guide our scripture-reading time during our family worship in the evenings. The commentary on the passage being read is usually quite good. The questions are probably best for the 7 year old range (a little difficult for my 4 yo and 2 yo) so we usually make up some other questions that they can answer in addition to discussing the questions posed in the book. This book has helped make family worship a regular event in our home and relieves my wife's lack of confidence which allows her to lead family worship with the children if I happen to have to work late.There are many different outlines for family worship, but in case others are interested we integrate this book into our evening worship time as follows:1) Gather together on couch before bedtime2) I or my wife reads the scripture passage referenced in Long Story Short, asking questions and making commentary while reading to help with comprehension3) Short summary review of what was just read and main take-away4) Skim through the discussion presented in Long Story Short to see if there's anything I missed in my summary5) Say, "Ready for questions?" Children (love to) respond, "Bring it on, Daddy!"6) Ask the questions presented in Long Story Short. Typically, at this age, will have to assist the children with answers requiring more than one or two words (thinking versus memorization questions).7) We each pray: Dad, 4yo, 2yo, Mom8) We sing hymns/songs and the children will usually dance. This is the part our children enjoy the most, so we usually sing at least 4-5 songs of varying lengths, sometimes more. First the new hymn we are learning (same one until we learn it by heart), then the kids take turns going back and forth picking songs until we realize we've let them stay up too late again.9) We close with everyone saying the Lord's Prayer together.10) As soon as we say "Amen," they race to the bathroom to brush their teeth.Again, this has been an invaluable resource in getting rid of the fear of starting and continuing our family worship time. I'm grateful it has been made available.Oh, one last thing: ignore the 5-days a week component of the book. Just do the next day each time you do family worship. Otherwise, you'll stress yourself out when you skip family worship for whatever reason and have trouble getting yourself started again as you'll feel like a failure. Just ignore the "week" component of the book completely and take it day by day. If you miss a day or two or three or four, don't fret. Just start back up again where you left off and you're good to go!

I would have given this 4 ½ stars if I could, but I just can't give it a full 5. My complaint is that the author continuously referred to the lessons and Bible readings as "stories." I understand the common us of the term, but caution using it when dealing with biblical history if you truly believe that it is the inerrant word of God. I highly recommend this for any Christian family.

I've spent the past 2 years working through many different Bible Studies/Devotionals with my kids and this one is by far my favorite. It directs you to open up your Bible and read a portion of scription each day (LOVE that it doesn't have the scripture written within the book but instead refers you to physically open up your own Bible and read the scripture and then refer back to the devotional for commentary and questions - vitally important in teaching children that God's truth can be found in the Bible alone.) It has such clear and simple explanations of how the Old Testament stories point to God's saving plan of salvation. I do this every morning with my children ages 6, 5, 3 and 1 and all of them are engaged while I too often learn things right alongside them. Highly recommend.

Each story points to Jesus!The book is chronological, teaching 78 of the main stories and characters of the Old Testament. Each week one story / character is taught. 3 days are spent on the actual story, one day is spent seeing how this story points to Jesus, and the 5th day a different Bible passage is read with the purpose of seeing what it teaches about Jesus.This book is appropriate for preschool - elementary children as written. It could be modified fairly easily for younger and older children so the whole family can learn together.Each week starts with an object lesson of some type. This relates to the story for the week. There are (usually) short passages from the Bible to read each day. (This is important, we want children to hear God's Word.) Then, the author does a brief recap of what the Scripture says. I have found these recaps to be very accurate and worded in ways that will help children understand. Next there are a few focus questions to discuss the story. Finally there is a prayer suggestion. The book claims to be "Ten-Minute Devotions" and it is possible that it could be finished in 10 minutes. I believe that many parents and children will stretch the 10 minutes!I love the way the author teaches great truths about God drawn from the story or character being studied.The one weakness I see is that there are no pictures! The book is intended for adults to read to children, but many children will benefit from pictures to help them understand the story. A Bible story book is due out in about a year from the same author that will have pictures. This will greatly help families with younger children to teach this material. Until then, families could use other picture story Bibles for the illustrations, and use the content of this book.Any Sunday School teacher, parent, or other adult working with children can greatly benefit from using this book. This book will be a great blessing to the body of Christ.

Amazing things can happen when you choose to move through the roadblocks.--When we know more of who God is, we will learn to trust what he does, and doesn't do, as all being for our ultimate good.--We always have a choice of how we will act in a certain situation. What the majority does, is not what we have to do. Sometimes, standing out from the crowd can ruin your life, but other times, it can save it.If you read the book of Esther along with the notes, it will help you see some things you might not have seen before.
