I am going to do something a little different for this review. I bought this book for my dad's birthday, he fled Cuba in the late 50s/early 60s and my mother left after a stint in an agricultural labor camp in 67. Both were children when they left, but they remember the city they grew up in. Like most people, they are used to seeing the best pictures of Cuba, the one that shows the beautiful city like a place out of time, the old perfectly maintained cars, the tourist areas. They knew it wasnt really like that, that it was a show for the guests, but this book is an example of the urban decay that crept into the non tourist areas that you dont see as much. I cant really explain the grim expression on my father's face as he turned each page, seeing the reality of the places my mother grew up, the occasional quip my parents made to each other in Spanish about the regime, seeing the street my mother once lived on, technicolor and crumbling. I don't know if it was a good present in retrospect, they knew that the city wasn't in great condition, but the realization of how it was a tad moving for them. Honestly, the pictures are wonderful, grimy, and full of life, and enough to give to cuban refugees an emotional response. Thank you Jeffrey Milstein.

A beautiful collection of images. This compact, affordable book will inspire readers. The photos are well composed, and most appear to make great use of natural available light. Refreshingly, there are no cliches.

This child on the cover carrying that piece of furniture made a wonderful picture for the school children to write little stories about just where they thought he was going with such purpose of direction!

I was lucky enough to visit Cuba this year (2012) and instantly fell in love with its beauty, the sights, the smells, the music, its architecture. This book was a gift for my boss who was born in Cuba but left when she was a very young girl and it brought tears to her eyes. It would be a welcome addition to anyone's collection of photography books.

Great picture book

I like it because it shows a lot of the architecture and old houses.

i was surprised and a bit disappointed to see the relatively small format when I received this book.But the pictures in this book make up for this. I am going to Cuba in two months to photograph, and the pictures in this book are the pictures I would like to shoot. The colorful colonialy style architecture is pictured in well composed photos, often including people.

A Gem, an architect's always level camera approach to a country his compatriots until probably next year are not allowed visit, he enters in an humanitarian capacity to the Cuban Jewish community. This is a visual experience, a picture book only, graphically designed as the photographic compositions therein. When the flood gates are opened to US tourists the content of this valuable book will be soon lost, it and other tourist photo-books of lost in time crumbling Cuba will remain the only reliable historic record of a delightful island's everyday built environment. I purchased this book a couple of years ago before going to Cuba, I tried to emulate it, not completely successfully. In a photo-book shooting data should always be included, it is in the appendix.

Steve’s materials are a great help. We followed his walking tours of Spain and learned a ton.

i'm thrilled with the purchase of our first rick steves travel book. his website and tv shows are VERY informative and practical and this 2008 book on Spain does not disappoint. it's not too clunky to take with us on our travels - yet, for day trips, we're photocopying a few "walking tour" pages so we don't have to take the book with us when we're travelling lighter. ... while he doesn't highlight EVERY inch of spain, he surely hits all the highlights! NO complaints and we look forward to experiencing more of the world through his expertise!

I bought the kindle version of this book...and it's pretty good, though the examples repeat themselves a lot so there isn't as much content as you'd expect. The writing is clear however, and the examples it does have are pretty good; presents a few ways to approach similar problems.

I really like this book.This book is really good. It not only walks you through a hands-on approach to learning Django, but also serves as a reference guide as you go on to create your own projects! The chapters are broken up into sizes that make you feel like you accomplish tasks along the way, without overwhelming you.

I felt like I understand django quite a bit more now, and got some general tips for python web programming. I don't actually use django very much at the moment, so I can't fully assess it, but I'm confident it will shave some time off the next time I am called to get a python website up and running quickly.

It should be stated that it is weighted toward "Soil Taxonomy" (the US soil classification system). Photographer Melba Levick’s images encourage the reader to relax, stay awhile, and imagine a warm afternoon in a colonial town ensconced in a cool courtyard awash with colors. She is so accomplished that she captures the full impact of an elegantly dining room or kitchen as well as the simplicity of a roof overhang displaying ornate ceramic pots with bougainvilleas. But there are few rustic scenes of weathered but less maintained homes. In A Mexican Garden features the exquisite domiciles of the well-to-do, those who can afford to create and reside in a kind of Mexican paradise.Levick’s subtitle for this volume is “courtyards, pools, and open-air living rooms” and she does full justice to them all. These are exuberantly rich and colorful spaces that are beautiful but staged for the professional photographer. Lavish tables are set for meals, cushions are set just right for evening company, deep azure towels are set out around swimming pools, but there is little sense of anyone actually appreciating and inhabiting these rooms, sitting at these tables, or eventually using the pools. For me, some of the magic drained away amid such static beauty. But it’s unfair to criticize a book for being all that it was meant to be by the author. I'm in the process of building on the Maya Riviera so this is important research looking for real ideas. Building in Spanish Colonial style is conducive to gardens and courtyards and we are fortunate to have two courtyards and many different type patios and open air spaces to design.This book has so many ideas it's incredible! I have many pages marked for further discussion. Even if I weren't investigating for decorating ideas this is still a coffee table book that I would be very proud to display in my house. You won't be disappointed if you enjoy viewing these type spaces. There is no detail of how the gardens were built and the type flowers but fortunately that's not of as much interest to me as just viewing the many ideas.

I actually ordered this for a friend of mine who needed some ideas on decorating her house. So when I recieved it in the mail, I fipped through it and was really, really happy with my choice. The pictures are colorful, and there are so many pictures to give ideas to anyone wanting to decorate their home mexican style. My friend loved the book as well, she kept thanking me for the next two weeks.

The beautiful photographs in this book will take you away. This book is all about the pictures. The text is limited. I liked that. The book is a nice size. Easy to pick up and look through. Recommend it.

Your basic coffee table book, nice photos of exactly what the book claims to be: Courtyards, Pools, and Open-Air Rooms. A lot of the subject matter is authentic, old and sometimes dilapidated. Don't expect to see many pictures of new or well kept patios, pools or gardens. This is the real McCoy, just like you'll see when visitng Old Mexico...not that there'e anything wrong with that.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The main characters were all interesting and I was hopeful for the ending and it did not disappoint. Toward the end I found myself not wanting it to end quite yet and to me that is one of many things that make a good book. I felt sad for Eddie because it was like he was treading water like crazy but going to drown anyway, yet he was still trying to survive. I won't spoil the ending but even with what happened to him, I liked the ending because I think he was going to become a different person and still have his family. Of course this would happen because Grace became a different person. I loved the descriptions of Grace's gardens because I could feel the cool shade and appreciate the beauty from the descriptions and I would find myself wandering around in the kitchen after reading about the lunches Grace would put together! All in all, a really good read for me.

Summer in Nantucket brings out the best and the worst in the residents.Grace and Eddie Pancik are an acknowledged "power couple." He, with his real estate/construction business and Grace with her gardening business, their names are on everyone's lips that particular summer.Madeline Llewelyn is Grace's best friend. They share confidences and keep each other's secrets. Until they don't.Trevor, Madeline's husband is a pilot and away a lot. He doesn't figure into the story very much. But he is supportive of Madeline's writing and her need for a "room of her own," so when she rents an apartment for her writing space, he is completely behind it. She is determined to write something worthy of the generous advance she has received after the success of her dystopian novel, Islandia. So will she cross a line to achieve her goal?Then when Eddie stops by Madeline's apartment to ask why she used another agent to rent the space, busybody eyes notice him there, and the first "rumor" springs to life. Filled with juicy gossip and a whole lot of scandal, this is a must have bead read! How I let this author slip by on my radar is downright horrendous. I want to grab all of her books and nestle them on my bookshelf. I want to pack them all up, go to Nantucket for the week, and read them all one by one. I feel like I have been missing so much by not reading them and am slapping myself because of it. If you are a fan of women's fiction and love novels that are downright scandalous then this is a must read! I am so glad I grabbed a copy when it was on sale because I am now an instant fan.Elin Hilderbrand does a wonderful job at bringing her characters to life. This book is told in 4 point of views (don't worry, it's easy to follow and will not confuse you) and allows us insight into every juicy detail. We have Grace, mother of twin teens, who may or may not be having a fling with her gardener. The we have Madeline, mother of one, and author who is having a hard time coming up with her next novel in time for the deadline. Madeline may or may not be writing a book about a close friend- sharing a shameful secret in the process. Next is Eddie. He is Grace's husband. He is living the high life in Nantucket only, his funds are quickly dwindling. Good thing he found a way to get more money... Only, it may be quite illegal. Finally we have Hope. She is one of Grace's twin daughters. She's a high school student, book nerd, and polar opposite of her twin sister Allegra. She would rather read a book than deal with drama, especially after what happened between her and a school mate, but she can't seem to stay out of the drama! What happens between everyone involved in this book is quite scintillating and you aren't going to want to miss out on what happens with each person!If you are looking for the perfect summer book, Elin Hilderbrand is clearly a must have author! I am going to be grabbing all her other books because I know she is worthy of a BIG binge read this summer! I highly recommend this one. It's a whole lot of fun and shouldn't be missed!

I needed a novel that didn't require too much thinking or looking up words. The Rumor met those needs, but it wasn't long before I was skipping pages of the book to get it to move along. The book has no foreshadowing, no suspense - nothing difficult to sort out or make you think even a little bit. It was truly vacuous. I was hoping for something with a little more depth. The book has a surprising number of trashy people.

I had read Barefoot quite a few years ago and just loved it. So I'm not sure why its taken me so long to read a second novel by Hilderbrand. But the good news is that I now have so many to catch up on!I really enjoyed this one. The characters were realistic and believeable. I loved the setting of Nantucket, especially since Mass. is my native state. I got engrossed in the story from the first chapter. Excellent writing, wonderful characters, great description of places and I could visualize them easily in my mind. The story had a satisfying ending and I'm so glad I rediscovered Hilderbrand!I'm now reading her first novel, The Beach Club, AND I'm listening to the audio version of The Love Season. I'm loving both as much as this one. I see some contented reading ahead for myself.

Grade 8 Up—Like Christopher Boone, the protagonist in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Doubleday, 2003), Marcelo Sandoval is a high-functioning, extremely self-aware teenager with Asperger's syndrome. He has an empathetic mother and a father, Arturo, who appears to be less empathetic as he pushes Marcelo to live in the "real world." The form the real world takes is a summer job in the mailroom at Arturo's law office. The teen is forced to think on his feet, multitask, and deal with duplicitous people who try to take advantage of him. Over the course of a summer, Marcelo learns that he can function in society; he is especially surprised to find that he can learn to read people's expressions, even to the point of knowing whom he can and cannot trust. Writing in a first-person narrative, Stork does an amazing job of entering Marcelo's consciousness and presenting him as a dynamic, sympathetic, and wholly believable character. At a little over 300 pages, the story drags at some points, bogging down in the middle. 3.5 StarsSeventeen year old Marcelo (pronounced "Marselo") is described as having an "autism-like" condition. That's as close as doctors can come to defining his unique gift of being able to hear music where no one else can. Unfortunately for Marcelo, his father doesn't see anything particularly rare or special about his son's gift. Instead, the father pushes Marcelo to take a job in the mailroom of his law firm --- dad's reasoning being that the position will teach Marcelo useful skills about "the real world" and put him on the path to success, rather than let his mind run away with creative dreamer fancies.Once in the mailroom environment, Marcelo meets and befriends the lovely Jasmine and Wendell, the son of one of the partners at the law firm. As his father anticipated, the first days were an experience for Marcelo, to say the least, as another "autism-like" trait that Marcelo displays is a struggle with interpreting facial expressions. But thanks to classes Marcelo attends to help him learn tips & tricks to help him out with this (instruction in voice inflection, speech patterns, and the like), it actually doesn't take him too long to find his way. It's a tough time for the reader though. We have to watch Marcelo navigate around co-workers who assume he's mentally incompetent, or those who try to bully or take advantage of him because he can't immediate recognize that he is being tricked. This is the "real world" his father so desperately wanted him to be a part of... thanks, dad!Marcelo develops a love for religious texts and often turns to reading or reciting scripture to himself to calm his nerves when the world starts to overwhelm him. At one point, he finds himself unexpectedly caught up in one of his father's most important legal cases, one that will push Marcelo to fight for what he believes in, regardless of what others around him might say.After being published in 2009, in 2010 this novel was awarded the Schneider Family Book Award for Teen Fiction, an award that recognizes fiction that focuses on characters with disabilities.I've come across pages of glowing reviews for this one, and while I did very much enjoy it, I can't comfortably join the 5 star crowd here. The story had some dents for me. I loved Marcelo, the way his mind worked and his unique style of interacting with others even if he didn't (admittedly) always understand all the unspoken social cues. Something in that I found myself relating to quite a bit. His friendship with Jasmine is sweet & lovely and I found myself wishing he and Wendell could get on a bit better. So the characters undeniably spoke to me on some level. My trouble was with the writing. Some of the characters came off just a little too weirdly staccato in their speech and mannerisms for my enjoyment. The flow of things just felt a shade off from natural. In Marcelo's case it's understandable and almost expected, given that he's been diagnosed with a "autism-like" condition, but that doesn't explain the other characters!Also, if I'm being honest with my reading experience... there was just something a little... lackluster maybe?... with the plot as a whole, as far as pace and plot action. I was all about this story in the early pages! Those first few chapters definitely had me hooked. But this was one of those books where I could feel my love and interest of it slowly trickling down instead of racing up. Reading pages on end and then realizing later, "you know, that was actually a whole lotta nothing going on"... and the book's not even that long! Still, I did quite like Stork's message here -- the way Marcelo finds his own voice in a sea of so many others telling him what he needs or what he should do --- it made me curious to try out some of Stork's other works just to compare, so I now have a couple on order. Even with the elements I myself found problematic, I would still solidly recommend this to anyone looking for YA reads featuring the theme of autism and enhanced abilities.

This is a story of courage, growth, and faith. Marcelo is high functioning autistic , and the story is told through his eyes. It was neat to get a glimpse of how his thought process works. He bravely leaves the sheltered environment of his special school to work a summer job in his father's law office--The real world. There he learns about love, hate, sin, forgiveness, and faith. I was drawn to Marcelo from the first and rooting for him to make it. This is an interesting, deep, and rewarding story of facing the unpleasantness in life head on and overcoming in spite of it. I highly recommend it.

I was assuming this book would be about the struggles an autistic teen faced when forced out of his comfort zone--but it was so so much more. Instead of the surface-level day-to-day struggles the main character faced, which I had expected, the author surprised me by forcing him to deal with much more difficult issues such as moral dilemmas, which is a true struggle for someone with autism who tends to view things as strictly black and white, having trouble processing things that fall into a gray area. It was apparent hat Stork must have known someone (or several someones) personally who have struggled with this disorder in order to be able to write from the main character's POV without painting a stereotyped, stock character. This was very well done.

Marcelo is a teen with Aspergers, attending a private school for kids with special needs, and looking forward to his next year when he’ll work with the ponies. But that’s not the plan his father has in mind, and Marcelo must leave the safety of his school for the minefield that is his father’s law office.What I enjoyed most about this story was the characterization. Stork does a masterful job of fleshing out all of them, not just the main players. And he does so with subtlety. You come to know Aurora through small actions—a look, a comment, a note of support for her son. Juliet is a hard nut of a secretary with little kindness, but she’s efficient, so she’s an asset to the firm and you know where you stand with her. It’s when she and Jasmine go toe-to-toe that you “meet and know" very well, too. And then there’s Wendell who is rather a stereotypical little rich boy with few scruples and ready to take advantage of anyone if allowed.I found Jasmine to be the strongest of characters in the book. I envied her clear vision of right and wrong, which was exactly what Marcelo needed as he worked his way through the real world’s moral shades of gray. Stork injects both pathos and humor for his characters throughout the book, so you must care for them all in some way.Stork’s language is perfect. And I fell into the story a lot of times because I was enjoying the way he revealed Marcelo. Here’s one of my favorites. “In some way, the strange-looking streets are simply a reflection of my thoughts. It seems perfectly natural to be lost outside when that’s the way I am inside. No landmarks anywhere.”I was least satisfied with the ending. I didn’t want a neatly wrapped up ending with the rotten guys punished and good guys rewarded, but I wanted one beat more. For example, I wanted to see Wendell again without his privileged smirk. But overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

One of my favorite reads this year. The writing was smooth, flowing, funny, charming, yet poignant. It didn't lose any depth for its entertainment value. The story unfolded in a thoughtful way that didn't underestimate its audience or the protagonist. This was my first Francisco Stork read, and I'm now a fan. If his other works are like this, then I'm sold. It's one of those books that flowed so smoothly and kept me so engaged that I read it quite fast. I just enjoyed being with the main character. That's a bit winner for me.
