Hi. Many have written reviews about the Sybex 7th and some for the 8th Edition before the exam. Very few have reviews after the exam. Bought the 8th Edition and used it as my primary source for preparation for the exam as well as the practice question book which I will write a review on that book. Have the 7th Edition as well. First, let me say Amazon did a great job packaging the book for delivery. Second, after reading the book cover to cover at least three time and taking good notes with mind maps all the online Wiley practice exams with a score of over 90%, I did not pass the exam on 10 August. Third, the back of the book claims that get more than 90% of the answers correct, you are ready for the exam. That claim is simply not true. I took a 2 week CISSP review course and they referenced the official ISC2 4th Edition and the Shon Harris all in one 7th Edition. They did say many of the questions on the real exam are similar to Sybex. What I saw this past Friday was not even close to the practice questions. I have been an excellent test taker all my life and the first time I didn't pass an exam.I have a Master Degree in IT, CompTIA Security + CE Certified and certifications in Software Development Security and Technical Project Management with over 10 plus years in IT Management. If you are considering buying this book for the CISSP exam, it is not enough to pass the exam, even if you get 90% or better on all practice exams. The recommended books are the ISC2 Fourth Edition and Shon Harris 7th All in One, Eric Conrad, 3rd Edition and the old Shon Harris videos, and the recent Sharon Green Videos. We had a 50% pass rate in our review class, which was not good at all because many used the Sybex book as opposed to the official guide which the instructors used--that is the ISC2 Official Guide 4th Edition. Sybex is a good book maybe as a reference once you are CISSP certified as a reference but it does not prepare you for the exam, despite the claims of 90% or better on all practice exams you are ready to test. Simply not a true statement.If you are serious about the CISSP, this book is NOT enough to pass the exam. That being said, the Sybex interactive test bank is good to learn the concepts at the surface. But you need to know below the surface to understand the real exam and what is being asked. This is a management exam, not an exam how many bits are there in an MD5 Hashing Algorithm. The questions on the real exam are very conceptual where others are obvious. The Sybex 7th edition and 8th edition are good as a supplemental source but not the primary source.
I've had security responsibilities in several positions over the years, but never focused strictly on security until now. For me this book fulfills two important roles. First is preparing for the CISSP exam, which is the intended goal of the authors. When combined with the practice tests book and Mike's weekly study plan emails I feel confident on passing the exam this month on my first attempt. The material coverage is both broad and deep so there shouldn't be any surprises on the exam.Which brings me to the second role of the book. This stays near to hand at my desk as a top rate reference book for the IS security space as a whole. Important details are easy to find thanks to the organization of the topics for ease of study. I can rapidly locate that formula for annualized loss expectancy or which law covers personal financial disclosure.I really like getting a 2-fer for my money and this book is money well spent.Update: Using this book as a reference along with Mike's CISSP Practice Tests, I successfully passed my CISSP exam in the new, adaptive format. I felt very prepared for the exam and completed it in 2 hours. I highly recommend Mike's tools for preparing. In fact, I'm using his CCSP books to prepare for that exam. The CISSP prep enabled me to score a perfect mark on the initial assessment test for CCSP and I have been consistently scoring in the 90% range on practice tests. Now I just have to find an open slot in the Prometrics center's schedule...
This book is terribly wordy, and often elaborating on things ("This is beyond the scope of the CISSP exam but....") which I see no rhyme or reason for. Clearly the three authors assigned chapters to each other and didn't collaborate well. It often repeats ideas and concepts across different chapter with a good bit of variance. I think there is also a lot of mistakes, for example on page 448 it lists examples of the different routing protocols for link state and distance vector, IGRP appears in both. On page 353 and 355 they have exactly the same sentences "Cloud computing is a natural extension and evolution of virtualization, the internet, distributed architecture, and the need for ubiquitous access to data and resources." There is also some confusion in how it calls SSAE 18 the new standard and then references SSAE 16 throughout the book. The list goes on and on, but what I believe to be errors has become distracting. I chose this book cause it was recommend on the ISC website, and provided from trainingcamp.com but I am starting to question if this is the best resource for my time.UPDATE: Based on the fact that I passed and this book was my primary study resource I raised it back up one star. I do think this book is a good resource for information to reference back to.
